Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said he was “very pleased” with a “really good” second half performance as his team beat Bradford City.

The Bees won 2-0 on a sunny afternoon at Griffin Park yesterday.

They dominated the first half without finding a breakthrough but Clayton Donaldson scored just past the hour mark.

George Saville sealed the win with a second 15 minutes from the end.

Mark, speaking after the match, said his team were too deep in the first half.

He said they were higher up the pitch in the second half and enjoyed their football.

He added his only criticism is that they should have won more convincingly.

“We had a really good second half,” said the Brentford Manager.

“In the first half we played some nice stuff but were 15 to 20 yards too deep.

“We were higher up the park in the second half.

“We had good desire, energy and tempo and it was a very positive second half performance.

“We had lots of strikes on goal and there are positives and negatives with that.

“When we are 28 to 30 yards from goal, can we be cleverer in the final third?

“We had some very good play.

“The only criticism is that it should have been more than two goals.

“That’s a very small thing.

“Bradford are a good team, with good players.

“We had to play with desire, tempo and energy and I was very pleased.

“The boys really enjoyed their football this afternoon.”

Brentford started with a diamond midfield – Alan Judge playing in behind Clayton Donaldson and Will Grigg.

Mark said the idea was to maximise the space for full backs Alan McCormack and Jake Bidwell to move in to.

The Bees switched to 4-3-3, their usual system, after half time and Mark said he was pleased with how his team adapted.

“Alan Judge played in behind the two strikers,” said Mark.

“Will and Clayton did really well for us up top.

“We have two very attacking full backs and they maximised the space available.

“We were, however, too deep.

“The second half was very, very pleasing.

“We made a change at half time.

“We have to be prepared that teams will put two banks of four against us and make camp.

“I was pleased with the way the boys adapted.”

Mark said Jonathan Douglas set the tempo for his team after half time.

“The first goal came out of nothing and George Saville scored with his right foot,” he said.

“They showed energy and desire.

“Jonathan Douglas made a run forward in the 46th minute.

“He set the tempo and showed the energy and desire.

“We carried on from there.

“We pressed them, won second balls and won it in key areas.”

Mark selected Will Grigg in attack and left Marcello Trotta – who had been away with Italy’s Under-21 side this week, scoring against Northern Ireland – on the substitute’s bench.

He said he had to be aware of the schedule with young players and added Adam Forshaw was taken off as a precaution.

Mark said he was pleased with the impact of substitutes Marcello Trotta, Jake Reeves and Stuart Dallas.

“Marcello has done really well for us of late,” said the Brentford Manager.

“He had a tough week.

“He travelled to Rome and then to Belfast, he scored for Italy Under-21 and put in a good performance.

“We have young players and are aware of that.

“Adam Forshaw was taken off as a precaution.

“He was tight in the lower back and we were making sure he was OK.

“I was pleased with the substitutes.”

Brentford are third in Sky Bet League One, a point behind Leyton Orient in second and three behind leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Bees face Orient away from home next Saturday but welcome Tranmere Rovers to Griffin Park first, on Tuesday.

“Every game is worth three points to us, sorry to sound boring,” said Mark.

“There is no point winning the games against teams at the top and losing others.

“Our focus is on Tranmere.

“We had a hard game today; we will rest well and recover.

“We want to put in a good performance on Tuesday and then look to Orient.”
