Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said he was “very pleased” with the performance of his team in their pre-season win against Barnet last night, particularly in attack.

Alan Judge scored twice as Brentford came from behind to win 5-1 against the Skrill Premier side.

Charlie MacDonald put the hosts in front but Stuart Dallas equalised before Judge scored twice in the first half.

Andre Gray scored the fourth and Montell Moore hit the fifth as Brentford dominated.

It could have been more – Kevin O’Connor fired a penalty over the bar, Jake Reeves hit the crossbar and other chances came and went.

Mark said his side started a little slowly but he was happy with the squad overall.

“I am very pleased tonight,” said Mark, speaking after the match.

“It was the next level up for us, a good playing surface and a nice welcome.

“Offensively, all night, we were very strong.

“It was very encouraging, we had a number of bodies in the box and, in truth, we could have scored more.

“The first 20 minutes we were a bit sloppy in the final third but, as the players said in the dressing room at half time, it is about match sharpness.

“Their physical condition was very good, which shows how hard they have worked in Florida.

“I am really pleased, there was some good play, the new boys came in and made a good impression and all-round the squad showed quality.”

Brentford started with a formation similar to the 4-3-3 they used for much of last season.

Alex Pritchard started as one of the midfield three but, like many of his team mates, popped up all over the pitch.

Mark said Brentford could not just do what they did last season, when they won promotion from League One, as they had to integrate the new players.

“We have to encourage good rotation,” said Mark.

“We have to work with the new players.

“It would be easy to stand on the Training Ground and say ‘same as last year boys’ but we have four or five new faces.

“They need to understand how we play and we need to help them.

“They have to learn quickly, which they will do.

“We will play to our strengths; we don’t have a 6’ 5” target man, that is not how we will play.

“We have technical talented footballers, some blistering pace.

“There are many positives from our second pre-season game.

“We want to see fluidity and if we lose he ball we assume our shape.”

New signing Scott Hogan, who joined from Rochdale on Monday, played 30 minutes due to a slight injury.

Brentford had three more players – Adam Forshaw, Alan McCormack and Sam Saunders – injured while Richard Lee also sat the game out as David Button and Jack Bonham played 45 minutes each.

“Scott had a small knock from training so he only played half hour,” Mark explained.

“His first touch was sublime and he showed his speed and strength.

“We now have new weaponry, which we need for the next league up.

“Adam is working back from surgery.

“He is close to full contact and will step up and look to play in last two friendlies and be ready for Charlton.

“Alan McCormack has a slight hamstring, we left him out as a precaution, he is working with the medical team and will be back with us at the weekend.

“Sam Saunders’ has an ongoing knee problem; we hope to have him back in the near future.”

Moore was given his first professional contract in the summer, to be part of the Development Squad, but he has played in the First Team pre-season friendlies, scoring against Barnet.

“If you are good enough, you are old enough,” said Mark.

“We have to show the boys in the Academy that if they train well and impress, they will get a chance.

“That is Montell.

“We have Josh Clarke, Charlie Adams, Jake Reeves, who is a bit senior.

“We will play the boys if they are good enough.

“We had a 19-year-old trialist, Daniel O’Shaughnessy, who stepped in and did well.

“They have to see a pathway.

“Montell did well at the end of last season, he has continued that this season and he got a game and a goal tonight.”

Trialist Tommy Smith also had a taste of Brentford action.

“I know Tommy well, he had been there and done it at the highest level and adds quality on and off the pitch,” said Mark.

“He is a class act and we will see how we go.”

Mark said there may be more additions to the squad but not bodies for the sake of it.

“If we do more business, and there may be one or two more, we will do it to add quality,” he said.

“There is no point adding a body for the sake of it, we have some really good players.

“There is a good squad taking shape and if we get one or two more it is in key positions and to add value.”

Brentford have three more friendlies to come, all at home.

They face OGC Nice on Saturday, July 26, and then CA Osasuna on Tuesday, July 29, before finishing the pre-season schedule against Crystal Palace on Saturday August 2.

There are now just over two weeks before Brentford kick off their Sky Bet Championship season against Charlton Athletic on August 9.

“Nice will be a real test, a high quality team,” said Mark.

“I am looking forward to playing at Griffin Park, hopefully another good work out.

“Some players may step up and play more, there is nothing to read in to that, it is about physical condition.

“From Saturday, we have two weeks to prepare appropriately and thoroughly for August 9.

“Our plans change slightly with Osasuna on Tuesday rather than Espanyol on Wednesday.

“We are back in the schedule, playing Saturday and Tuesday, getting recovery and making sure the players are prepared for a long, hard season.

“Tonight the fitness was good, we are in good shape.

“We wanted two foreign challenges, for variety.

“I think Nice and Osasuna will keep the ball, keep it on the deck more and make us work harder to get it back.

“We are making good progress.”

Brentford used 22 players against Barnet with two more – Adams and Clarke – unused substitutes and Forshaw, Lee, McCormack and Saunders also available.

Mark admitted he had tough decisions as to who to select for the match against Charlton.

“These are the decisions you want to have to make,” he said.

“The competition is fierce.

“The players are fighting to play but they know it is a long season.

“The starting XI from the first game won’t be the team in May.

“We can’t afford to lose two, three, four players and have weak back-up; we have seen tonight that would not be the case.

“We have a squad of quality and depth.

“We are a team and we need the unity, the players are together.

“The players fight for the shirt in the right way.”
