Brentford Manager Mark Warburton hailed his team after they came from behind twice to beat Swindon Town.
The Bees gave the Brentford boss his third win in three since taking charge by beating Swindon 3-2 at Griffin Park yesterday afternoon.
The visitors started well and went ahead early on but Sam Saunders equalised before the break.
Swindon again went ahead through a fortunate goal but Clayton Donaldson headed an equaliser and Marcello Trotta scored the winner.
Mark said it was a great game to watch and praised his team for their resilience.
He said he knew Swindon would come to play football, like Brentford’s next opponents Milton Keynes Dons – who are at Griffin Park on Sunday.
Mark, speaking after the match, said Brentford did not get their tempo high enough early on, allowing Swindon to take control but won their battles and won the game.
“It was a great game for the neutral,” said Mark.
“I thought there was tremendous character from the boys to win.
“It was the first time we have been behind for a while.
“We came back twice, which showed tremendous resilience, and we tried to keep playing.
“By the end we should have nicked it by two or three.
“We said to the boys before the game that this one, and the one against MK Dons on Sunday, would be our type of game – a football game.
“But we have to do our work and earn the right to play too.
“We wanted to win our battles around the park, get the ball and play.
“I thought our tempo was a bit slow in the first 15 minutes, we didn’t shift the ball quickly enough, everyone wanted an extra touch, and we paid the price for that.
“We shifted it quicker after that and we looked a good side.
“We found ourselves 2-1 down and had to show character and desire to play.
“We got on the front foot.
“The front three were outstanding but we showed good desire all over the field.”
Brentford deserved to be level at half time, having taken control following a slow start, but Nicky Ajose took advantage of a ricochet to put Swindon back in front after half time.
It only took Brentford two minutes to level through Clayton Donaldson and Mark praised the positive response.
He said match winner Marcello Trotta was tremendous but all the attacking players – Will Grigg, Stuart Dallas and Clayton Donaldson – caused Swindon problems.
“We didn’t deserve to go 2-1 down and it was key how they reacted to that disappointment,” said Mark.
“To come back that positively was excellent.
“Marcello Trotta was tremendous, he worked so hard, Clayton did too.
“I was pleased with the movement and runs.
“We looked dangerous.”
Mark said Swindon’s good attacking display gave David Button a chance to show what he could do.
“Swindon caused us problems but that is why you have a good goalkeeper,” said the Brentford Manager.
“David’s distribution was excellent and he made two or three outstanding saves.
“He really marshalled the back four well too.
“I’m delighted for David.
“In the first few games he had with us, he had nothing to do.
“A keeper needs to prove himself, hopefully the supporters have seen how good he can be.”
Brentford have lost Kadeem Harris to a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out of action for a few weeks.
Will Grigg also picked up a hamstring problem in the Swindon win.
There has also been illness in the camp – Toumani Diagouraga missed the win at Preston North End with a bug and George Saville was unable to play against Swindon, Scott Barron has also been affected and Sam Saunders recovered enough to play his part.
Stuart Dallas was recalled from a loan spell at Sky Bet League Two Northampton Town and came on against Swindon.
Mark said there are others ready to step in.
“We have had illness and injuries and we have seen the benefit of the squad.
“Stuart Dallas came on today and did well, Jake Reeves stepped in.
“We have other members of the squad very keen to play.
“Shaleum Logan has been outstanding in training.
“We have Kevin O’Connor, Richard Lee, Farid El Alagui, Ben Nugent, all pushing for places, they all want to be on the pitch.
“I told Stuart Dallas he had a chance to show Brentford fans what he was like when he was match fit.
“He made an impression and I want to thank Northampton Town for the work they did with him.”
The win was Brentford’s tenth in 11 League One games, the other being a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With Wolves, in second, and Leyton Orient, the leaders, kicking off later in the day, Brentford went top with the win, albeit they ended the day third, a point behind the top two.
Mark said the players had benefitted from working with former Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler and an extra year experience gave everyone belief The Bees could go better than last season when they finished third and lost in the Play-Off Final.
“We have belief in our squad and I think we will be in a very good place on May 4,” said Mark.
“For all the fantastic work last year, we were never top.
“They are a year older, worked with Uwe and his staff.
“We are top now, that might change by the end of the day, but we are top now.
“Eight weeks ago we were 14 points off top.
“It is a tremendous achievement to get that back.
“If they have belief, they will be in a good place.”
