Brentford B's Alex Gilbert feels the side are moving in the right direction after getting another pre-season game under their belts on Saturday.

The narrow defeat to Maidenhead as well as the win over Salisbury the previous week puts the side in a position where they head to Wales for a training camp looking to build from a strong foundation having built fitness in recent weeks at Jersey Road.

"It's good to get more minutes and we haven't got any injuries from any of the lads which is always a positive," said Alex. "It's difficult when lads come in to us on trial and some come in from the First Team to all have the chemistry but I think we did well. We had spells on the ball moving it around but we couldn't get that final ball over the line."

Alex wore the captains armband at York Road as well as against Salisbury previously with the central midfielder putting in some impressive displays as he looked to drive The Bees forward from the middle of the pitch. On his form and finding his own fitness, Alex said: "When you first come back and you haven't played for a while the adrenaline can be pumping which means you may force a few things and rush stuff so it's about keeping a calm head and try to play. Hopefully we can keep playing and score some more goals.

"I feel good, I was doing a lot of work before I came back. As we know, Neil pushes us a lot so we're all getting into a good position now and hopefully we can keep building on that in Wales and in the games to come. We haven't been back long and the predominant focus has been on the running and the fitness so we haven't had a lot of time to work on set pieces. As I said, there are new lads and those things will come.

Looking ahead to the trip to South Wales next week, Alex believes it will be another opportunity for the squad to bond further.

He added: "It will be great because you get to see each other away from the normal training environment, you can be at the hotel and have chances to bond with each other. Hopefully that builds a stronger chemistry for us."
