Charlie Goode got the better of Michael Olakigbe as ten-man Wigan Athletic held on to win at high-flying Peterborough United in Sky Bet League One on Saturday.
Both Bees started, as Wigan made the most of their limited opportunities to take a 2-0 lead just after half-time.
Matt Smith’s dismissal with 15 minutes to play didn’t knock the Latics out of their stride, as Thelo Aasgaard grabbed his second of the afternoon to make it 3-0 with five minutes to play.
Nerves, however, started to jangle in injury time, as Josh Knight and Ricky Jade-Jones netted for the hosts who, try as they might, couldn’t find a dramatic late equaliser.
Olakigbe played 69 minutes on his debut for Peterborough, while Goode completed the full 90.
The defeat dropped the Posh to fourth while Wigan remain in 13th place.
This week, Wigan host Exeter City on Saturday, with Peterborough on the road at the Grecians on Tuesday night, before travelling to Wycombe at the weekend.
Myles Peart-Harris and top-of-the-table Portsmouth opened up a four-point gap over second following a draw and a win this week.
Peart-Harris played 90 minutes on Tuesday as Pompey were denied all three points away at promotion rivals Oxford United by James Henry’s 90th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw.
Then, on Saturday, Northampton Town proved no match for Portsmouth, as Paddy Lane’s double, in between strikes from Connor Ogilvie and Callum Lang, ensured a comfortable 4-1 victory.
Peart-Harris played 57 minutes in that game, with a trip to Carlisle up next on Saturday.
Fin Stevens was forced off through injury in the 43rd minute of that game against Portsmouth and went on to miss the Us' 1-1 derby draw at home to Reading on Saturday.
Stevens is expected to miss another three weeks due to the knock he picked up, ruling him out of this weekend’s trip to Blackpool.
Paris Maghoma and Bolton Wanderers slipped out of the automatic promotion places following their 1-1 draw at home to fifth-placed Barnsley.
Maghoma played the full 90 minutes, as Zac Ashworth cancelled out Devante Cole’s early strike for Barnsley midway through the second half.
Earlier in the week, Bolton had exited the EFL Trophy following a penalty shootout defeat to Blackpool; a game in which Maghoma wasn’t involved in.
A point behind Derby with two games in hand, Bolton can move back up to second on Tuesday night when they travel to Cambridge United before Saturday’s away game at Northampton Town.
Tristan Crama helped Bristol Rovers keep a clean sheet on the road at Exeter City on Saturday.
The defender played the full 90 minutes as Brandon Aguilera’s 15th-minute strike proved decisive in Devon.
Matt Cox was an unused substitute for the Gas who are up to 10th, 12 points off the play-offs, with home games against Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion coming up this week.
Daniel Oyegoke remains sidelined for Bradford City due to a shoulder injury. In his absence, the Bantams progressed to the semi-final of the EFL Trophy, beating Doncaster Rovers 1-0 on Tuesday night, before a goalless draw at home to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
Welling United closed to within four points of National League South safety following a 2-1 win over Hampton and Richmond on Tuesday night and a goalless draw at home to Taunton Town on Saturday.
Ben Winterbottom wasn’t involved in either game, with Welling hosting Barnet in the fifth round of the FA Trophy this weekend.
