It was a day of heartbreak at the bottom of Sky Bet League One for Paris Maghoma and Aaron Pressley.
Maghoma and MK Dons went into the final day of the season out of the relegation zone on goal difference, but their draw at Burton Albion, coupled with Cambridge United’s victory over Forest Green Rovers, saw MK slip into the bottom four.
Maghoma played the full 90 minutes at the Pirelli Stadium as MK couldn’t turn 31 shots into a season-saving goal.
The midfielder impressed during his time with MK, making 20 appearances and scoring his first senior goal against Lincoln City in February.
Pressley and Accrington were all but down going into the final day, given their poor goal difference, but did at least end the season on a high with a 2-1 victory at Oxford United.
The striker scored the 85th-minute winner at the Kassam Stadium, ending this season as Stanley’s second-top scorer with eight goals in all competitions.
Sky Bet League One
Myles Peart-Harris played the final 30 minutes for Forest Green Rovers as they ended their difficult campaign with that 2-0 defeat at Cambridge. Peart-Harris returns from Gloucestershire with five goals and four assists to his name from 40 third-tier outings.
Ellery Balcombe featured twice this week in a pair of defeats for Bristol Rovers. On Tuesday, he played 90 minutes of the Gas’ 2-1 loss at Shrewsbury Town, before coming on for the final 10 minutes in a 3-2 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
Ellery returns to Brentford having kept two clean sheets in eight games during an injury-hit spell with Rovers.
Sky Bet League Two
Lachlan Brook signed off his time at Crewe Alexandra with a 93rd-minute equaliser in the Railwaymen’s 2-2 draw at Newport County on Monday.
Brook played 70 minutes in Crewe’s 3-2 midweek win over Bradford City and retained his starting place for yesterday’s season finale.
1-1 heading into injury time, Omar Bogle thought he’d won it for the home side but, straight from the kick-off, Lachlan was played through and kept his composure to curl home his third goal in 33 League Two appearances.
Sky Bet Championship
Halil Dervisoglu wasn’t involved in Burnley’s 3-0 final-day win over Cardiff City. Halil scored once in nine substitute appearances for Vincent Kompany’s title-winning Clarets this campaign.
Injury kept Charlie Goode out of Blackpool’s final day 1-0 win over Norwich City. Goode only managed two appearances for the Seasiders who were relegated back to League One after a two-year Championship stay.
Tariqe Fosu played 90 minutes in Rotherham United’s final day goalless draw at Wigan Athletic on Monday.
Fosu featured in all 19 of the Millers’ games following his arrival in January, with his one goal and two assists helping United maintain their Championship status and end a six-year yo-yo between the second and third tier.
Across the continent
Mads Bidstrup and FC Nordsjaelland moved back to the top of the Danish Superliga with a thrilling 3-2 victory over closest rivals FC Copenhagen. It was the second of two high-scoring encounters between the sides this week.
On Thursday, Copenhagen qualified for the Danish Cup final with a 5-3 win over FCN in their semi-final second leg, winning 7-6 on aggregate.
Bidstrup played 85 minutes in that game, before playing the full 90 on Monday. Ernest Nuamah’s 88th-minute goal proved decisive at Right to Dream Park.
A point clear with four to play, FCN head to AGF on Sunday.
Oleg Reabciuk’s 68th-minute goal decided Monday’s derby against Panathinaikos and ensured a third-placed finish for Olympiacos in this season’s Greek Super League. Sergi Canos is still out with a knee injury and is likely to miss next week’s season finale against PAOK.
FC Groningen’s relegation to the Eerste Divisie was confirmed on Sunday following a 1-1 draw at Go Ahead Eagles. Mads Bech played the full 90 minutes as Willum Thor Willumsson’s equaliser for Go Ahead on the half-hour condemned Groningen to second-tier football next season.
In Joel Valencia’s absence, De Graafschap kept their slim Eerste Divisie Play-Off hopes alive with a 2-1 win over MVV on Friday.
De Graafschap travel to the side occupying the final Play-Off place, VVV-Venlo, on Friday knowing only a win will keep them in the race for the top eight.
