Next Saturday’s Sky Bet League One play-off final at Wembley will pit Brentford loanees Paris Maghoma and Fin Stevens against each other, with a place in the Championship the prize on offer.

This year’s end-of-season shootout hasn’t disappointed so far with both semi-finals over the past week settled by just a single goal.

After finishing third, Maghoma and Bolton Wanderers made the trip across country to Barnsley on Friday night for their first-leg tie at Oakwell.

And the Trotters took control with a 3-1 win. Maghoma was key to the victory, crossing for Dion Charles to put Bolton ahead on the night midway through the first half.

Charles and Sam Cosgrove exchanged second-half goals before Randell Williams scored direct from a corner in the 94th minute to give Bolton breathing space.

Maghoma played 83 minutes in the first leg and kept his place in the starting XI for the return.

Heading back to Toughsheet Community Stadium with a two-goal advantage, Bolton had seemingly made the tie safe by half-time, leading 2-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate, thanks to goals from Adam Collins and Eoin Toal.

But Barnsley had other ideas. Adam Phillips made it 2-2 after 64 minutes before Cosgrove grabbed his second of the night, and third of the tie, to set up a frantic final 15 minutes.

Maghoma was withdrawn just after the third goal as Bolton weathered a furious Barnsley storm to claim their place at Wembley.

While Oxford United’s clash with Peterborough United didn’t have as many goals, it was no less dramatic.

At home in the first leg, a 53rd-minute strike from Elliott Moore gave the U’s a narrow advantage heading into their trip to Weston Homes Stadium.

Stevens’ 11 defensive actions was the most of any player on the pitch, as were his three successful tackles, and three interceptions, as Oxford kept their 15th clean sheet of the campaign.

Heading to PE2 for Wednesday night’s second leg, Stevens retained his spot in the starting XI.

A cagey first half burst into life just before the break with Josh Knight levelling the tie only for Oxford to retake the lead in stoppage time thanks to Cameron Brannagan’s penalty.

Stevens, who had been booked, was withdrawn at half-time as Posh laid siege to Oxford’s goal after the break.

The hosts had 18 shots in total, eight on target, but couldn’t find a way through a dogged Oxford rearguard.

Michael Olakigbe wasn’t involved in either squad for Peterborough, having made five appearances with Posh since joining in January.

Next weekend’s final takes place at Wembley on Saturday 18 May (4.15pm kick-off).
