Lloyd Owusu has decided to retire from football after a 17 year professional career.
He has retired from playing but will stay in the game due to his role as Head Coach of the International Football School in Australia, where he now lives.
Lloyd is seventh in the list of Brentford’s all-time top goalscorers, having scored 87 goals in a two spells at Griffin Park
He began his career at then Conference side Slough Town, and joined Brentford in the summer of 1998 for £25,000.
The Slough-born forward made his debut against Mansfield Town on August 8 1998, scoring 22 league goals as Brentford won the Third Division title.
That season saw the emergence of what would be his trademark goal celebration of “raising the roof” after scoring, with both hands raised above his head, which supporters copied in their thousands.
His 61st minute goal in the title decider against Cambridge United at Abbey Road in May 1999 was enough to lift the trophy.
Injury blighted the year 2000 for Lloyd, but he would appear in the LDV Vans Final against Port Vale in April 2001, Brentford losing 2-1 despite taking an early lead.
Brentford manager Steve Coppell’s failure to win promotion in the Second Division Play-Off Final against Stoke City at the Millennium Stadium on May 11 2002 would prove to be Owusu’s last game of his first spell in TW8.
That season, he scored 22 goals, and became hot property as his contract was expiring and thus available to other clubs on a Bosman free transfer.
Owusu joined second tier Sheffield Wednesday, and would score on his debut as a substitute against rivals Sheffield United at Hillsborough.
Moving to Reading in 2003 after an initial loan spell, he would rejoin Brentford in the summer of 2005, now managed By Martin Allen.
In August 2005, he became a full international, playing for Ghana at Griffin Park, qualifying for The Blackstars through his parents.
The Bees were in the running for promotion to the second tier in that season, but an injury sustained in Germany playing for Ghana would rule him out for 12 months.
Without Lloyd’s firepower, Allen’s Brentford would miss out on promotion via the Play-Offs to Swansea City in May 2006, and be relegated a year later, when he would join Yeovil Town in the summer of 2007.
Lloyd would spend further spells at Cheltenham Town, Brighton and Hove Albion (loan), Luton Town, and Barnet before a return to Slough Town in 2012.
Emigrating to Australia in the autumn of 2012, he played for White City, with his last club Hakoah Sydney City East in the NSW State League Division One.
The Club wishes Lloyd well in his retirement plus hopes he has a long and successful coaching career.
