Leon Redwood said he was “pleased” that Brentford’s Development Squad beat Swansea City in their latest Under-21 Professional Development League Two South game.

The Bees beat their Premier League rivals 2-1 at their Jersey Road Training Ground yesterday afternoon.

Farid El Alagui headed the first early on before Leon scored the second, slotting home a Luke Norris pass.

Brentford went in to the game knowing three wins would give them a chance of finishing in the top two in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table and making the end of season Play-Offs to decide the overall winner of the competition.

“It was a very good result,” said Leon, speaking to Bees Player after the match.

“Swansea are a good side.

“They like to pass the ball.

“The key was to keep the ball.

“We dominated the game and should have scored more goals but we are pleased with the result.

“We had to go a bit more direct at times.

“The pitch was hard to play on.

“We needed to go over the top and keep the ball in their half.”

The first goal came when Farid El Alagui headed in a Charlie Adams corner but The Bees couldn’t get a second before half time.

Aaron Pierre headed against a post and Sam Griffiths missed a golden chance while Swansea goalkeeper David Cornell was kept busy.

Brentford’s second came 21 seconds in to the second half when Leon slotted under the Swansea stopper from a tight angle.

He almost added a third later on but hit the post.

“We were 1-0 up and still a bit anxious because they could come back,” said Leon.

“The second goal helped us kill the game off.

“Full backs have to go forward and join in nowadays, I like to do that and I have to do that.

“It was a good finish.

“The keeper got a touch but I was pleased with it.

“I tried to do it again but hit the post.”

Swansea came back in to the game when striker Rory Donnelly robbed Brentford goalkeeper Nick Hamann and scored.

They tried to find a leveller but Brentford kept control of the game.

“There was a little bit of pressure after they scored so quickly,” said Leon.

“But we were dominant.

“They came out with a different game plan.

“They tried to press us higher up the pitch.

“I don’t think they had many clear cut chances.”

Leon has not played many games since the turn of the year due to an injury he picked up late in 2012 but said he was close to full fitness now.

He said he was pleased to complete 90 minutes against Swansea.

“My fitness is getting there now,” he said.

“I think I am slowly getting back to my top form.

“It has been tough, I have been in and out of the injury room but I am getting there now.

“I got a knock in October which kept me out for a while.

“Then it reoccurred.

“I have been in and out since.

“It feels very good to get 90 minutes under my belt.”

The win took Brentford back above Queens Park Rangers in to third in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table.

They are four points behind Charlton Athletic, who went back to the top of the table by beating Ipswich Town last night, and second-placed Cardiff City.

Cardiff have only one game to play and if they slip up, Brentford could secure a top two finish by winning their final two games against Barnet and Colchester United.

“We have to win these games and hope for the best,” he said.

“It is then up to other results.

“Even if the other results don’t go out way, if we win our games, we can say we had a good go.”
