An early Kirsty Matthews goal and an outstanding first-half hat-trick from Demi Edwards ensured the Women’s First Team left Fetcham Grove with all three points.

Following the disappointing end to the First Team’s unbeaten run last weekend, Karleigh Osborne’s side were looking to get back to winning ways as they travelled to South London to face Leatherhead.

The opening 10 minutes was fairly even as both teams looked to get a foothold in the game, the first chance came on 12 minutes when a Nikki Saunders cross found Matthews whose close-range shot was blocked by Leatherhead defender, Tanya Dady.

Matthews had big shoes to fill as she replaced top goal scorer, Chloe Logie as striker, due to the number nine unfortunately being ruled out through injury.

The forward clearly felt no pressure as she opened the scoring for the Bees on 24 minutes, Matthews showed great commitment to press Leatherhead keeper, Lara Burrows and steal the ball from her before tapping home into an empty net.

Just two minutes later the away team doubled their lead after a brilliant move.

Captain on the day, Chloe Webb crossed in a deadly ball towards the far post with Edwards showing good awareness to predict where the cross would land, and the number 20 was able to pass the ball in from three yards out.

The visitors couldn’t be contained and made it 0-3 on 28 minutes with Edwards getting her second following an amazing strike.

The attacking midfielder let fly from 25 yards with her shot arrowing into the top left corner leaving Burrows with no chance this time.

Edwards was on fire and playing with extreme confidence as she continued to find space between the Leatherhead midfield and defence.

After proceeding to put the home side under pressure, Edwards sealed her hat-trick before the half-time whistle, and it was another exceptional goal.

A venomous shot from 30 yards out flew over Burrows into the top left corner similar to her second goal, leaving the hosts stunned after what was an amazing first-half performance from the Bees.

The second half proved to be less eventful with the game possibly already out of sight for Leatherhead.

However, Alicia Christte nearly pulled one back for the home team with the number six getting on the end of a free kick from Eva Keen, but her header went just wide of the post.

Nicole Goolab impressed from the bench for Brentford and came close to getting her sides fifth on 65 minutes but her shot from just inside the box was well saved by Burrows.

As expected, the away team slightly took their foot off the gas with 15 minutes to go and Leatherhead nearly capitalised on this when Kacie May-Harlow’s shot from just outside the box went just wide of Emily Boycott’s post.

Despite some late pressure from Leatherhead, the Bees managed to get too full-time with their clean sheet intact after what was an exceptional performance and the perfect response after the defeat to Dorking.

The Women’s First Team will hope to use this win as a platform for their next two games before the Christmas break.
