Brentford Women’s First Team progressed to the Second Round of the County Cup after beating local rivals Actonians Reserves 2-0 in comfortable fashion, following the victory Manager Karleigh Osborne gave his thoughts on his side’s performance.

He said: “I’m over the moon that we are in the next round of the cup and have continued our unbeaten run, we have built ourselves a strong platform to succeed."

The first half was fairly even with both teams having good opportunities to open the scoring.

The best chance for the Bees came on 12 minutes when Nikki Saunders took on Actonians' right back, Darcie Townley and delivered a great cross to top scorer Chloe Logie, but the number nine wasn’t able to keep her close-range effort down as it went inches over the bar.

Speaking on the first half, Osborne explained: “We was sloppy in the first 45, I don’t think we moved the ball well enough and there wasn’t enough fluidity in our play.

“The message to the girls at half-time was to switch on and to tidy up our game, I was certain if we went back to basics and concentrated on keeping the ball, we would give ourselves the best chance in the second half."

However, it was nearly a disastrous start to the penultimate half when Nadia Peters brought down Kayleigh Peters in the penalty area on 55 minutes with the referee deeming the challenge to be a foul and pointing to the spot.

Azza Fouly stepped up on her debut in goal for the Bees and saved Fiona Moloney’s penalty with her teammates rushing over to celebrate with the new keeper.

Talking on Fouly’s debut, Osborne said: “Azza was brilliant today, despite it being her first game I was impressed with how calm she remained throughout.

“She pulled off some good saves when we needed her, the penalty save kept us in the game so we have her to thank for that.”

The Bees broke the deadlock on 66 minutes, and it was Demi Edwards with a brilliant strike from 25 yards out.

The attacking midfielder has been highly influential recently for the First Team with Osborne extremely happy with her recent performances.

“Demi is a real talent and I think she knows how we feel about her, it’s great that recently we have started to see more consistency from her.

“Her second-half performance was brilliant she was finding spaces to become available to receive the ball which really helped us in an attacking sense.”

Kirsty Matthews wrapped up the win for the away team following an amazing strike from 30 yards, her left-footed shot flew straight into the Actonians’ keeper’s top right corner, sealing the win in spectacular fashion.

Osborne continued: “It was a great goal from Kirsty to ensure the win, as unbelievable as the strike was we know she has that in the locker, she brings the team so much and recently she has been outstanding."
