Kamohelo Mokotjo said that the “sky is the limit” next term following Brentford’s ninth-place finish in the Sky Bet Championship. The Bees were in Play-Off contention until the penultimate game of the season; defeat at Barnsley ending a seven-game unbeaten run and the side’s top-six aspirations. Speaking at the Club’s end-of-season awards night, Kamohelo was confident that both he and his team-mates can go one step further in 2018/19.

“A team performance that stands out would be the Birmingham City game,” the South African told iFollow Brentford. “We won 5-0 and everything just came together for us. We weren’t satisfied with the scoreline despite scoring five goals – we dominated that game. The one-nil victories both home and away showed that we have a lot of character in the group. Next season we have to be more aggressive and turn our weaknesses into strengths – once that happens the sky is the limit.”

A calming and down-to-earth figure in the Jersey Road ranks, Kamohelo said he was happy with his first season in England following a summer switch from Dutch side FC Twente:

“I’ve had to adapt to the pace of the game and the more offensive role that I’ve been playing in midfield. Looking back at my first season I can say it’s a job well done. I’ve become accustomed with my new role; I can play in both a defensive midfield position and more offensive because I have so much energy in me! I think it’s a win-win situation for myself and the Club - they have a player who is very versatile.

“I value collective achievements over individual moments, so the way the team has grown and adapted in a short period of time has been the winner for me. I enjoy playing football as well as other things away from the pitch such as dancing and being joyful. I’m a very calm person but when I’m on the job I’m always serious.”

Kamohelo said he would return a “better player” following a period of reflection over the summer:

“I’m looking forward to seeing my family back in South Africa and reflecting on my own performances. I want to look back at my games and see the players I have most chemistry with and identify the ones who need more support. I’ll come back a better player.”
