Jonathan Douglas said the promotion he has waited so long for felt “very good”.

Brentford were promoted to The Championship after beating Preston North End on Friday.

It was the first time Jonathan had been promoted in a professional career that stretched back 14 years.

He said Brentford did not get the rewards they deserved last season when they finished second in League One and lost the Play-Off Final.

He said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton had told the players to go out and get what they deserved this year and the squad had done it.

Brentford had to wait for confirmation that Wolverhampton Wanderers had beaten Rotherham United before their promotion was sealed.

Wolves scored two late goals to win the game 6-4 and send The Bees up.

“It feels very good,” said Jonathan.

“Overall the lads deserved it; we played some great stuff all year.

“Last year we didn’t get the rewards we deserved.

“The gaffer told us to get what we deserved, today we did.

“We showed a lot of bottle to come back this year and put in the performances we have.

“It stood us in good stead.

“We have a great bunch of lads and I am delighted for them.

“Everyone was on the pitch at the end so I thought we were up.

“In the dressing room someone said it was 4-4.

“Then it was 5-4 and 6-4.

“I can’t believe it, I am delighted.

“I have waited so long and banged on the door, finally it has opened.”

Brentford beat Preston with an Alan Judge penalty but the same man later slipped when taking a second and fired it over the bar.

Jonathan said Brentford deserved the win achieved without players including Adam Forshaw, Harlee Dean and Sam Saunders who had played their role in the season.

“We were better than them today, we passed the ball well, played some good stuff, created chances, got a couple of penalties,” he said.

“We deserved the win.

“They huffed and puffed at the end.

“The lads at the back have been different class.

“We missed a few today and they deserved it as much as the others.”

Jonathan said he always knew the squad was good enough and had words of praise for former boss Uwe Rösler and coaches Alan Kernaghan and Peter Farrell, who left in December, as well as Brentford Manager Mark Warburton and his assistant David Weir

“I knew we had a squad capable of doing it,” he said.

“We had to get the belief in to the lads that we were good enough.

“Uwe Rösler, Peter Farrell and Alan Kernaghan get a big mention; they are a massive part of what we have achieved.

“David Weir and the new gaffer have gelled well.

“We got our just rewards.”

James Tarkowski said Friday was the best day in football by a mile.

James joined The Bees from Oldham Athletic in January and said he was now looking forward to being in The Championship.

“It is amazing,” he said.

“I moved here form a team struggling down the bottom.

“At the end of the season I have been promoted to The Championship.

“It has been my best day in football by a mile.

“Now we can look forward to three more games and a massive season next season.”

James said he could not describe his feelings at the end but said it was a great day for everyone at the Club.

He said news of Leyton Orient losing, which ensured The Bees could go up on Friday, came on to the pitch from the fans.

“I can’t describe my feelings at the end,” said James.

“It was ridiculous.

“I just wanted to get off the pitch and celebrate with the lads.

“You can tell when Orient went behind how happy the fans were, we had to keep concentrating.

“It is a great day for everyone involved with Brentford.

“We can all enjoy it.”
