Jermaine Udumaga said he and his teammates know they didn’t play well enough in Monday’s 5-2 Development Squad defeat to Bristol City.

Connor Lemonhaigh-Evans scored a hat-trick, while Bobby Reid chipped in with two, as City avenged the 5-1 defeat The Bees meted out back in November.

Speaking to Bees Player after the match Jermaine said the team could have no excuses for their performance and the result as they knew they didn’t play well enough on the day.

“We are disappointed,” said Jermaine.

“We didn’t play how we usually play.

“We were second best to a lot of balls and we didn’t get at them like we usually do.

“We didn’t press them and we are just disappointed in ourselves really.

“You could put some of it down to the journey but we can’t make excuses if we want to make it in the first-team here.

“Once I scored we had to try and settle and make sure that they didn’t score again but they did get through and score again which was disappointing.

“At half-time Lee said we had to get at them more and press them more.

“We needed to press higher, get the ball back and counter attack them.”

The Bees were architects of their own downfall at times on Monday, giving the ball away cheaply and allowing the hosts in on goal.

Despite those mistakes leading to the goals that ultimately cost them the game, Jermaine said they were bound to happen with The Bees playing in the style they do.

The midfielder said that mistakes are part and parcel of the development process at Brentford and, so long as they are learned from, will benefit players in the long term.

“Seth Owens tried to play it out like we get taught here and when things like that happen you can’t complain or say a bad word you just have to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Jermaine.

“You are allowed to make mistakes here and you can’t moan at people for that.

“Everyone is going to lose the ball and everyone is going to make mistakes, but you just have to make sure that when you do it next time you pull the pass off.

“We gave away quite a few sloppy goals today and we need to make sure that we don’t concede sloppy goals like that again in future.

“The conditions were bad but we are footballers and we can’t put it down to conditions.

“The weather is not always going to be perfect when we play.”

Jermaine’s two first-half goals, one from the spot and another which came courtesy of a fine low drive, took him to five for the season and four in his last four league matches.

With Development Squad manager Lee Carsley calling for more goals from him at the start of the season Jermaine is pleased with his recent form.

He hopes that by keeping up this form he can work his way towards first-team football, either here at Griffin Park or out on loan.

“I am happy with my two goals,” said Jermaine.

“Lee said to me that if the team loses he still wants me to be the one who scores the goals.

“I did that today so I am happy.

“It is a good statistic that I have been involved in the most goals for the Development Squad this season.

“I saw that in the changing room the other day that I had created the highest number of chances for the team.

“That is pleasing for me but I just need to keep scoring and keep doing the best I can and hopefully something will happen for me.

“We will look into it and try and sort out my situation before I go out on loan.

“We need to see what happens.

“Everyone wants to go out and play mens’ football and hopefully that will happen for me too.”
