Ivan Toney ‘never doubted’ his opportunity on the international stage would come.
The Brentford striker could become our first England international since 1939 if he features for the Three Lions in their Nations League game against Germany.
Ivan’s call-up is the realisation of a lifelong dream and, with the World Cup in Qatar on the horizon, he is determined to make the most of the opportunity.
“I have full confidence in myself,” the 26-year-old told the gathering media at his first England press conference.
“You have to keep working hard and it makes it that much sweeter when you do get the chance.
“I never played for any of the other age groups, so going straight into the senior squad is a big achievement. I’m very proud of that and I wouldn’t have wanted it to go any other way.
“This is my opportunity and I’ve got to take it with both hands. I’m excited, I’m confident and I’m very hungry. I’ve been working for this moment and here it is. I’m not going to let it go by.
“I’ve never felt pressure in my career. It’s more excitement. It’s such a privilege to be playing alongside such quality players and representing my country. I’ll just go with the flow and hopefully I can make the most of it.”
While reflecting on his latest career milestone, Ivan paid tribute to his family.
“Everyone around me has made massive sacrifices,” he continued.
“My sister used to take me to football and do her uni work while she was waiting for me, then she’d take me home while my dad and my mum were working.
“My mum’s played a massive part, making sure that I was eating and not herself.
“My dad has played a massive part, taking me all over the country; trials here and there and supporting me at every game. My other sister supports me all the time.
“To be sat here now in an England top, it’s not just me that’s done this.”
