Saman Ghoddos has been named in the Iran squad for two vital upcoming matches. Iran are currently trying to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held at the end of next year. They face United Arab Emirates and South Korea in the coming weeks and Saman is in the squad for the two games.

Iran are in a six-team group for the current stage of the qualification process and have played two of their ten games, winning both. They are top of Third Round Qualification Group A as the only team to have won both games. South Korea and UAE are the teams directly behind them in the race to reach the World Cup at the end of next year. They face UAE away from home next Thursday, 7 October, before hosting South Korea on Tuesday 12 October.

Saman has been a regular in the Iran squad during the qualification process. He has been involved in all six matches in the qualification process since it resumed after the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed matters last year. He has won 28 caps for Iran so far and played for them in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Saman also has two caps for Sweden. Saman has earned six of those caps since he made a permanent switch to Brentford at the start of 2021. He has scored three international goals so far, two of them for Iran.

The World Cup qualification process also decided the teams to compete in the AFC Asian Cup 2023, which will be held in China. In reaching the Third Round of World Cup qualification, Iran have confirmed a place in that tournament. The top two the group will reach the World Cup.
