Having taken four points from their last two Premier League fixtures, Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking to build momentum and put distance between themselves and the bottom three.
Julen Lopetegui’s side are four points above the relegation zone ahead of Brentford’s visit to Molineux.
We spoke with Liam Keen, Wolves correspondent for the Express and Star, to get his thoughts.
Wolves are 13th in the Premier League going into Saturday’s match. How would you sum up their season to date?
It has been a proper rollercoaster for Wolves.
Mistakes in the summer and a bad start to the season meant it was inevitable Bruno Lage would eventually be sacked, and the route to appointing Julen Lopetegui was anything but smooth.
The new manager had the World Cup break to spend time with his side and he made an instant impact by dragging them off the bottom of the table.
Since then, huge highs with wins over Liverpool, Spurs and most recently Chelsea have been balanced out by very poor losses against Bournemouth and Leeds, but overall the new boss has so far done what he set out to achieve.
With eight games left to play, Lopetegui’s side are four points above the bottom three. While they are not out of trouble just yet, how much of a relief is it to have that slight cushion for the run-in, given the fact the club were in the relegation zone for much of the first half of the campaign?
It is a huge relief - and that win over Chelsea was monumental.
Wolves, however, have been here before with similar gaps in recent months, and they have consistently thrown it away.
April will be a key month for the club's hopes of staying up - they have to build on this buffer.
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Brentford team news: Pontus Jansson could miss remainder of season
Wolves have conceded 19 goals in their last 15 games in the league and only shipped more than one in a game on four occasions since the World Cup, compared to eight times before it. Has there been an explicit focus on putting defence first?
Absolutely. Lopetegui has been guilty of being very conservative in his approach at times, but often it has worked. He has put a massive emphasis on clean sheets and even started rewarding the staff and players with meals out after each clean sheet. That focus has helped Wolves, though they still struggle to score goals.
Which player should Brentford fans keep an eye on at Molineux?
Though Wolves have a few players coming into form at the moment, their lack of goals makes it difficult to choose a forward for this question.
Instead, keep an eye out for Joao Gomes - if he plays! The midfielder has only made two starts since his January move to Molineux but was sensational against Chelsea last time out. He is a warrior in midfield, has incredible energy and wins the ball back superbly.
How is Lopetegui likely to set up on Saturday?
He often makes a handful of changes and occasionally changes his system, so this is hard to call. My guess, however, is that he will go with a 4-2-3-1 system that will see midfielder Matheus Nunes playing out wide but drifting inside.
This could mean four central midfielders are in the starting XI, with the aim of overloading Brentford in the middle.
There’s been an even spread of one win each and one draw in this meeting over the last two seasons, but what’s your score prediction for this one?
It is a very difficult game to predict and Brentford have often caused Wolves problems with their forward line. My prediction is a 1-1 draw, or similar score draw.
