Brentford Football Club's Academy has received the backing of fans and the community in supporting a club in war-torn northern Uganda.
The Academy launched an appeal last summer looking for Bees supporters and the people of Brentford to join them in helping the Gulu United Football Club become 'The Biggest Little Football Club in the World'.
A grassroots campaign – United for United – has been launched aimed at reviving the game in the Gulu area of Uganda and staff at Brentford FC were inspired a video from a group of committed volunteers who want to create a fresh start for the club, and leave a legacy for the next generation.
Over the course of the past year Brentford’s support has included welcoming Adrian Bradbury, from the United for United campaign, who has been at the Brentford FC Training Ground to meet the staff.
Stuart English, Foundation Phase Lead Coach in the Brentford FC Academy, has been to Uganda to help with the region’s first-ever youth identification and training camp, bringing together Gulu’s most talent young players.
It was hoped a player could come on trial but he was unable to get a visa.
During the course of the year, the Club has been collecting worn boots to send out to Uganda for the young players to use.
A total of 100 pairs were sent at the start of the month.
Ose Aibangee, Brentford FC Academy Director, said: "This is a fantastic campaign and everyone in the Academy was inspired by it.
"While we focus on the aims of our Academy we must never forget that football is a global game and can bring hope to many.
"The idea to bring football back to an area hit by war by encouraging youngsters to play is one that struck a chord with us.
"We will do anything we can do to help spread the message of football and sport and were delighted to get involved in the United for United campaign at the start of the season.
"We set a target of collecting 100 pairs of used football boots by the end of the 2013/14 season and are very pleased that Brentford supporters helped us do that.
“The boots will offer great support to some potential stars of the future.
“We will continue to support Gulu United where we can and hopefully the relationship will continue to blossom.”
