Brentford 2 Bristol City 1, Division Two Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg, 14th May 1997
After a 2-1 win at Ashton Gate in the First Leg three days earlier, Brentford and Bristol City returned to Griffin Park with their sights set on a place at Wembley and promotion to Division One. The First Leg win over Bristol City had been David Webb’s side’s first win in four matches without a goal and nerves were taut when The Robins levelled the tie thanks to Darren Barnard’s goal just after half-time. However, in front of a crowd of just under 10,000 The Bees rallied, Robert Taylor netted his 13th of the season midway through the second-half to put Brentford back in front and a trip to Wembley was confirmed with 11 minutes to play when Marcus Bent scored.
Bristol City 0 Brentford 1, League One, 11th February 2006
Fresh from knocking Premier League Sunderland out of the FA Cup 14 days earlier, Martin Allen’s side headed to the West Country looking for a third straight league win to keep up the pressure at the top of League One. The home side needed the points for another reason as they sat in the relegation zone. In a game that wasn’t one for the purists City came closest to scoring through Marcus Stewart, Stuart Nelson making a fantastic save with his legs to deny the Bristol frontman. The only goal of the game arrived with 12 minutes to play when Lloyd Owusu converted from close range to send 750 Brentford fans back down the M4 happy.
Bristol City 1 Brentford 2, Sky Bet League One, 22nd October 2013
Uwe Rosler’s Brentford side arrived at Ashton Gate sitting mid-table, struggling to ignite their season after the previous year’s Play-Off Final disappointment. Victory over Colchester United the previous Saturday had brightened the mood a little but Bristol City immediately had The Bees under pressure. The Robins dominated the first-half but couldn’t find a way past Richard Lee and then, slowly, The Bees came back into the match. Sam Saunders was introduced with 16 minutes to play and he made an immediate impact, firing Brentford in front from 20 yards. Saunders then turned provider for Clayton Donaldson with four minutes left, the striker volleying home from a corner at the back post. Marlon Harewood pulled one back in injury time but The Bees held on to build a run that would see them win 13 of their next 14 league games on the way to promotion.
