Things could hardly have started better for The Danes as Huddersfield Town defender Mathias Jørgensen poked home from close range inside 60 seconds. However, the advantage lasted less than three minutes as Henrik's clearance rebounded off Andreas Christensen into the path of Mario Mandzukic to level.

That was the sum of the major action in 90 minutes and it took until the dying stages of extra-time for the match to spring back to life. A pinpoint Luka Modric pass split the Danish defence and, with the goal at his mercy, Andrej Kramarić was brought down by Jørgensen. The referee had no doubt in pointing to the spot but Kasper Schmeichel denied Modric from 12 yards to send the match to a shootout.

Both sides saw their first spot-kicks saved before going on to score their next two. Danijel Subašić, who had earlier denied Christian Eriksen, then saved from Lasse Schone only for Schmeichel to pull off more heroics with his third spot kick save in less than ten minutes to keep it at 2-2 after four penalties.

Next up, Subašić repelled Nicolai Jorgensen's weak effort gifting Ivan Rakitić the chance to win it, an opportunity he didn't pass up; rolling home to set up a Quarter-Final tie against hosts Russia next Saturday in Sochi.
