Harry Griswood said it was an ‘incredible occasion’ to be one of 64 fans selected to be part of the fans’ choir ahead of this season’s FA Cup Final at Wembley.
BBC Sport teamed up with Songs of Praise to put together a choir made up of a fan from each of the 64 FA Cup Third Round sides.
The choir, a mix of male and female singers ranging from 20 to 100 years-old, were then invited onto the pitch before the FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa to sign Abide With Me alongside the The Band of the Brigade of Gurkahs in front of nearly 90,000 fans.
Songs of Praise, who teamed up with BBC Sport as part of their FA Cup programming, asked for people to submit stories that reflect their personal memories and passion of the cup from every level of the game.
The winning tales - selected by a panel of judges from the worlds of football, music and journalism – were a combination of amusing and moving stories which capture the spirit of the FA Cup and have a strong thread of family, community and tradition throughout.
Harry, who is a Season Ticket Holder in the New Road, said it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be on the pitch before the Cup Final.
“It was an incredible occasion,” said Harry.
“It was really surreal because we practiced the song about 50 times and then it was over in two minutes.
“It was something that I had never done before and will probably never do again.
“We met up at 2pm on Friday at Wembley to learn the song and do all the run throughs.
“We were on Adrian Chiles show on BBC 5Live and also did BBC London that evening.
“We stayed at the hotel at in Bushey then did more media on the Saturday morning before getting to Wembley for 2pm.
“All I did was look around when I got on the pitch.
“I couldn’t see the conductor or hear the music so I took the earpiece out and just tried to enjoy the occasion as much as I could.
“It was good because there was safety in numbers as there were 60 of us.
“There wasn’t too much football rivalry going on.
“Everyone was there together to be in the choir so people got along.
“After the season that we have just had it was a lot easier to be there representing Brentford than it might have been a few years ago.
“I used to be in the Ealing Road but last season and this one I will be in the New Road.
“I kind of entered as a joke with my mates because I really can’t sing.
“Luckily there wasn’t an audition and I got through to be at Wembley but I won’t be leading the New Road choir any time soon!”
