Brentford goalkeeper Nik Tzanev has been named in the New Zealand squad for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup
The 18-year-old made his debut for New Zealand in an Under-20 friendly against Uzbekistan last month.
He has been chosen as one of three goalkeepers in the squad for the tournament, which New Zealand are hosting.
He has been given the number 12 shirt.
Nik was born in Wellington and moved to England in 2006.
He has been first-choice goalkeeper for Brentford’s Youth Team this season, playing 19 games as The Bees reached the final of the Under-18 Professional Development League.
Nik has also played two games for the Development Squad this term.
He was named Youth Team Player of the Year and has been offered a professional contract for 2015/16.
Ose Aibangee, Brentford FC Academy Director, said: “Any international recognition is cause for celebration.
“But Nik being chosen for a World Cup is extra special, both for him, the Academy and Brentford Football Club as a whole.
“With New Zealand hosting the tournament there will be a lot of focus on their squad and I am sure Nik will do all he can to get in the team, despite being two years younger than many of those around him.
“Nick had a great season here and fully deserved his contract.
“This is another great moment for him and I wish him all the best.
“It will be a learning experience for him and he will develop as a player being in that environment.”
New Zealand start the tournament on Saturday May 30 against Ukraine.
They have further group games against USA and Myanmar on June 2 and June 5.
