Brentford B’s Alex Gilbert says the side can go into their quarter-final match in the Premier League Cup with confidence as they recorded their sixth win in the competition this season.

The Bees claimed five wins in the group stage to progress before they defeated Middlesbrough Under-21s at the Lamex Stadium on Monday afternoon as the B team captain netted the second of two goals for Brentford on the day in a 2-1 win.

He said: “Everyone is delighted. Neil (MacFarlane), the staff, and the players. We really back ourselves so we want to go all the way to the final and win it.

“It was a professional performance, we went two goals up and the momentum switched towards them a little bit in the second half and we dug in, realised we perhaps had to play a little bit longer and more direct and slow the game down a bit. It worked in our favour and gave us the win in the end.

“Every team in the Premier League Cup is going to be a good side with good players who will keep pushing. It’s a difficult competition but we back ourselves."

Reflecting on the attacking intent that the side showed, particularly in the first half of the game, Alex wants the side to maintain their threat going forwards but believes they need to be a little more clinical to take the game away from the opposition. The youngster was also delighted to get on the scoresheet once again.

He continued: “We’re a very attacking side and we create a lot of chances in games but we need to start putting even more away early in games so it doesn’t give them that little sniff of getting back in the game.

“I got the ball on the right and saw it open up in the middle so I thought I’d drive in and I always back myself to use both feet so gave it a good strike with my left foot and it went into the bottom corner and the rest is history."
