The third day in to our six night stay in the heart of the peaceful German countryside, and we woke up to a lot more cloud and a bit of a breeze which necessitated a couple of the coaching staff to ask Bob for jackets, whereas a day earlier they would have been happy to have taken the sessions topless.
Breakfast was a choice for all somewhere between 8.00am and 8.45am. However, once everyone was in attendance we started the day, as promised, with the result of the Bees fans vote. Many had answered the call to retweet what they considered to be the best of the entertainment set before us the previous evening, allied to the votes cast by the assembled players and staff. We took on board the fact that most fans would invariably vote for the players ahead of the staff, whilst we also took on board the fact that the players and staff in attendance the previous evening had no option but to listen to the entertainment set before them.
Once the voting had been scrutinised by the judging panel (me), the following were advised that they would have to entertain us again this evening, firstly with a song of their own choice, and secondly the four of them would have to perform a group song together. Yes we really are gluttons for punishment! The four lucky contestants were to be Jan Holldack, Romaine Sawyers, Matt King and John Egan, thus Nicholas Jover and Daniel Bentley were both spared.
The morning then followed a similar pattern to Sunday with medical prep followed by the warm up and a training session which included a number of diverse activities on the two full size pitches available to us, both of which are in excellent condition. I spent quite a bit of time watching Simon Royce our goalkeeping coach putting his three charges, Butts, Jack Bonham and Daniel through their paces. I have to say after close scrutiny over a lengthy period of time, that we have four exceptional goalkeepers on our books, and yes that includes Roycie.
There was little or no incident of note to tell you about, apart from Neil Greig almost having to wade through a swamp to retrieve a ball that had flown over the top of the netting at the end of the training pitch. What was noticeable was that there were three or four members of staff there to help tell Greigy exactly where the ball was precariously hanging, but once he had retrieved it and thrown it back, they all disappeared leaving Greigy having to manoeuvre his own way back. Now I know footballs are expensive but Greigy has a value too!
After lunch there was a bit of down time when the players have a chance to rest or maybe get a massage from Chris "Sladey" Domoney. Our masseur is known as Sladey because of his likeness to someone who thought a few years ago that we had celebrated winning a match against his then club "as if we had won the FA Cup". Then it was snacks at four and an hour later the players had the choice of time in the gym or a bike ride. The numbers were evenly split between the two activities.
During the afternoon we increased our numbers by one when one of our co Football Directors, Rasmus Ankersen arrived.
The bewitching hour of seven o'clock then came round and you could sense the excitement in the room knowing that the Sing Off Finals were imminent.
When it came to that special moment, the first up was Romaine Sawyers who sung The Scripts' The Man Who Can't Be Moved. Dean Smith said it was a million times better than the song he sung after joining his previous club Walsall. Praise indeed. Then it was John Egan's turn to impress. He chose Drake's One Dance to show what he was capable of. He was followed by Jan Holldack who chose to sing Lukas Graham's 7 Years. Having heard it I think Jan deserves to get 7 years, solitary confinement! I should at this point tell you, as if you hadn't guessed already, that whilst I'm detailing the choice of songs, I had no idea of any of the three previous songs prior to tonight, and having heard them, I still have absolutely no idea.
Finally, Matt King stepped up, and at last a song I had actually heard of, Frankie Valli's 1967 hit Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. He even got the trapped audience clapping and singing along to the chorus which has since been made famous by the Griffin Park faithful and includes words such as Sammie Saunders and my wife. It then came to the group song, and as if it had been rehearsed they sung Happy Birthday in honour of Andreas Bjelland who was celebrating his 28th Birthday today. Lasse Vibe was then invited up to make a small presentation to his fellow Dane together with a card signed by all.
Then all that was left was to determine through spontaneous applause, who was the outright winner of the 2016 Pre-Season Worst Singer award. To rapturous applause Jan won it easily. He will find out after breakfast tomorrow morning what he has won. I hope he's not too excited about the prospect of what he could win. Dinner was completed with Dean Smith announcing to all and sundry that training would be at 7.15 tomorrow morning, pre breakfast. It was met with a stunned silence.
The remainder of the evening was spent with a few having a late massage, whilst others watched footage of the days training.
And so to bed.
