Brentford’s Futsal BTEC Scholars started their 2015/16 campaign with a win and a loss against Southampton ‘B’ and ‘D’ teams in their respective FLT Futsal South East Division matches on Wednesday.

The fixtures, which took place at @Futsal Swindon Arena, saw Brentford’s ‘A’ team lose 4-2 while the ‘B’s ended up comprehensive 16-2 winners over the Saints ‘D’ team.

It was a new look ‘A’ team which took on Southampton’s ‘B’ team. Despite Mason Roseboom getting the opening chance which drew a good save from the Saints keeper, it was some sloppy defending from Brentford that was their undoing.

Southampton scored 3 goals in 3 minutes that took the wind out of the Brentford’s game plan. An early time out taken after 4 minutes saw a defensive reorganisation. The key message was to stay in the game until half time.

This had the desired affect and Brentford’s chances were limited to some hopeful long shots which were easily dealt with. Southampton were able to disrupt the Londoners game and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

With the score 3-0 at the interval, Brentford were able to get back on track when a superbly worked goal, with some excellent movement disorganising Southampton’s defence, saw Azhan Iqbal finish from 7 metres out.

Just as Brentford were starting to look like getting on top, it was Southampton who restored their lead to 3 goals.

This necessitated another Bees time out. Goalkeeper, Saki Shire was sacrificed as Mason Roseboom took over the shirt to play as a ‘Fly-Keeper’. To the uninitiated, this is a tactic where the regular goalkeeper is withdrawn and replaced by a player who normally plays out on court. The aim is for the keeper to play as an outfield player. It is a high risk, high reward approach.

As expected the Bees dominated possession and Mason Roseboom supplied a through ball that Bees top scorer from last season, Frankie Finn got the faintest of touches to set up an intriguing finish.

Brentford persisted with the ‘Fly-Keeper’ and while dominating possession, hitting the post and having a shot cleared off the line could not make any further dent in the deficit.

It was a totally different story for the ‘B’ team who handed out a 16-2 thrashing to Southampton’s ‘D’ team.

The highlight was 3 Bees players getting hat-tricks with one of those, Kyle O’Neill scoring 6 (setting a new Brentford record for goal in a game).

The scoring started after 90 seconds when Abas Ali received the ball with his back to goal 8 metres out. He outwitted his defender with a disguised turn and hit a fierce shot past the Saint keeper.

Goals by Humzah Karim, Ilyaas Maalin (making his debut) and Brad Scott effectively put the game out of range after 12 minutes.

With the Bees leading 7-1 at half time, the message was not to settle for an easy second half.

Kyle O’Neill took this seriously and rattled off 3 goals in 5 minutes with Southampton also scoring a goal to make it 10-1 with 14 minutes remaining.

The ensured that they kept to their half time target by scoring another 6 with Karim and Scott completing their hat-tricks.
