There's a new man in charge at The City Ground in Philippe Montanier, what has the start of his reign been like?
Well, it has certainly been eventful! Montanier favours a very attacking style, which is in complete contrast to the last manager, Dougie Freedman. It’s meant they’ve looked great going forward and it can be entertaining to watch – as was the case against Burton on the opening day. But it’s come at the expense of looking solid at the back, which was Forest’s biggest strength last season. The amount of goals conceded is a concern. They just need to find the right balance.
What has been made of the chopping and changing with 21 players used in the first two league matches?
It is incredibly difficult to predict what line-up the manager will go for in a game. He does seem to like making a fair few changes. I’m not sure even he knows his strongest XI yet – and with more signings anticipated, he’ll have even more of a selection headache to come. He changed the formation against Brighton on Friday, too. Switching from four at the back to three with wing-backs. It didn’t really work, so I’d probably bet we won’t be seeing that system used again any time soon.
What do fans make of the new man in charge?
I think the jury is still out at the moment. It’s very early days. The process of finding a manager took so long, initially many supporters were just glad to have someone in charge. No-one really knew what to expect from Montanier. Since then, fans have gone from being on a high after that thrilling win over Burton – when they got the entertainment many have been craving for some time – to a low after Friday’s defeat. Forest have gone through so many managers in recent years, though, so hopefully Montanier will be afford some patience. The club really needs that stability.
Britt Assombalonga and Matt Mills should return tonight, how important are they to Forest? Who else should Bees fans be looking out for?
They are both key players. Assombalonga in particular is very important. He’s a goalscorer, a poacher, and you can’t overstate how crucial having someone like him in the team can be. There was a worry he wouldn’t be able to reproduce his old form after being out for more than a year through injury, but (touch wood) so far, he’s hit the ground running. Mills plays a vital role at the other end of the pitch. It is very much a new-look back line at the minute and they are still getting used to each other. Mills is the lynchpin. He’s the experienced head who tries to get them organised. Elsewhere, Pajtim Kasami has impressed in midfield. He’s looked a class act on the ball.
The last few seasons have seen a series of mid-table finishes, what are the fans' expectations for this campaign?
For a time last season it looked as though Forest would get dragged into a relegation battle. After the worry of that, initially, I’m sure many fans would have been happy for another mid-table finish this time around. But there’s always that optimism before a new season at any club, isn’t there. And with a new manager and new players, there was a lot of positivity around the City Ground before it all kicked off. Ultimately, Forest want to get back in the Premier League. I think most supporters would hope they can at least challenge nearer the top end of the table this time around.
The Bees seem to have had a bit of a hoodoo over Forest recently, what do Forest fans make of us?
Last season’s result at the City Ground was particularly one to forget! And no-one likes to see a team do the double over you. I think most fans will expect it to be a tough game for Forest. But, I’m sure they hope the team will try to make up for last year and aim to get some kind of result.
Finally, a score prediction for tonight?
I’ll sit on the fence and go for a draw. 2-2. Forest have been conceding goals, but they can also score them too, so it could well be another action-packed evening.
