A mixed Brentford team won 2-0 against a Leyton Orient XI this afternoon (Tuesday) at the Matchroom Stadium.

Philipp Hofmann scored the opening goal and a penalty from Alan McCormack secured victory for the team led by the combination of Richard O'Kelly and Kevin O'Connor.

The starting lineup included only three names who aren't members of the First Team squad this season. Two of those were Centre-back pairing Chris Mepham and Manny Onariase, the third being Mahamadou Diarra.

The visitors were ahead inside the first five minutes through Hofmann. Konstantin Kershbaumer was brought down on his way to the box but Alan McCormack recovered the ball and the referee played a good advantage. McCormack's cross into the box was nodded home at the far post by an unmarked Hofmann.

A few minutes later it could have easily been two-nil. Kerschbaumer found space on the edge of the penalty area and tried to curl the ball towards the top corner. It struck the bar and bounced down but didn't cross the line.

At the other end, Orient had their chances. With 20 minutes gone, Onariase had to be sharp to flick a high cross away from an advancing forward right in front of Jack Bonham.

Yoann Barbet was put under similar pressure soon afterwards and had to be strong to hold off an attack at the far post. The Frenchman stood up to the task and managed to nod the ball away at the last second.

Before half time Sam Saunders had two chances to increase Brentford's lead. The first was a one-two with Kerschbaumer that put him one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who pulled off a good save. The second was less clear cut, as the winger collected a pass from Josh McEachran only to fire a shot narrowly north of the goal's apex.

The second half took a while to get going, despite Brentford remaining in control of the game. Play was slow as The O's parked men behind the ball and it took The Bees some time to find their next opportunity.

In the end it came from the penalty spot, Saunders the one fouled inside the box. McCormack stepped up to take it and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner.

Having doubled their lead, Brentford took a lot of confidence into the last quarter of an hour. Saunders and substitute Reece Cole both saw shots go close before a hectic last ten minutes. Three great saves in quick succession by the Orient keeper were highlights for the home team.

The first came when Hofmann volleyed a corner at goal from close range and the goalkeeper somehow managed to get his arm up to parry the ball wide. The second was a one-on-one chance against Bradley Clayton, another substitute, who had burst into space behind the back four. His shot was blocked by the goalkeeper's foot. The third was a moment of brilliance from Cole to find Kerschbaumer unmarked on the right side. The Austrian didn't even take a touch, he just let fly, but the goalkeeper was again down to make the save.
