Bryan Mbeumo will be in the starting XI for Brentford’s opening game of the Premier League season against Tottenham Hotspur.

The forward, who was responsible for 17 goal contributions last term, was withdrawn with a dead leg during the first half of the Bees’ final pre-season game against Lille. But speaking during his pre-match press conference, head coach Thomas Frank confirmed that the Cameroon international is fit and available for selection.

Christian Norgaard is in contention for Sunday’s game against Spurs, while Frank Onyeka – another enforced withdrawal last weekend – will be assessed ahead of the fixture.

Rico Henry and Josh Dasilva are both fit, with Frank confirming that the former will start at Gtech Community Stadium on the opening day.

Brentford finished ninth last season - one place and one point below Tottenham - and Frank admitted he is expecting a tough test on Sunday regardless of whether Harry Kane is leading the line for Spurs, given the ongoing speculation surrounding the striker’s future.

“He’s a fantastic player, an unbelievable striker,” Frank responded when asked about Kane, who netted 30 times in the Premier League last season. “I went to the Shaktar game and he scored four goals.

“But the alternative is Richarlison, who was Brazil’s number-one striker during the World Cup.

“I don’t think it will change the way they play [if Kane is absent], although [Kane and Richarlison] are two different types.”

Frank continued: “Tottenham are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They are a very good team with fantastic players.

“They have appointed an exciting coach in Ange [Postecoglou]. What he did at Celtic was very impressive, and what he’s trying to do now at Tottenham looks exciting.

“It will be a very, very difficult game, but we also know that we are a good team. We believe in ourselves.

“At home, at the Gtech, we are difficult to handle. We’ll do everything we can to come flying out and attack with aggression.”
