Brentford Manager Mark Warburton has named former Scotland international defender David Weir as his assistant.

Mark Warburton took over as Brentford Manager last week and won his first game in charge against Oldham Athletic on Saturday, December 14.

He has brought in 43-year-old David Weir to work alongside him.

Mark Warburton said: “I am delighted to have David join us at Brentford Football Club.

“He had an outstanding playing career, working under some great coaches, and has a wealth of coaching experience.

“There will be an undoubted benefit for the staff and players to have someone of David’s quality here with us.

“In conversations with David, he recognises the progress that has been made at Brentford and is excited to join us.

“The players and staff are in good shape, it is a great time to be welcoming David to Brentford.

“I am looking forward to working with him.”

David had a long and successful career as a player, featuring for Falkirk, Heart of Midlothian, Everton and Glasgow Rangers.

As well as winning a large number of medals during a 20-year career he was named Scottish Premier League ‘Player of the Year’ and Scottish Football Writers’ ‘Player of the Year’ in 2010.

David also won 69 Scotland caps.

After retirement, he moved in to coaching, taking up a position at Everton.

He was appointed as manager of Sheffield United in June but left after three months at the helm.

David started work at Brentford’s Jersey Road Training Ground this morning.

David spoke to Bees Player before training this morning; an interview with Brentford’s new Assistant Manager will be available shortly.
