Daniel O’Shaughnessy feels this month’s Finland Winter Training Camp in Abu Dhabi is a great chance for him to impress incoming national team manager Hans Backe.

The 21-year-old defender is one of 23 players selected for the match training camp in Abu Dhabi which is Backe’s first chance to look at his new charges. The Finns play Sweden and Iceland on their camp and Daniel is hopeful of making his debut in front of the new manager.

Speaking to Bees Player after his call-up was announced Daniel said: “I am really happy as it came out of the blue. I got my first call-up in the summer but I didn’t play so I am really happy to get another call-up. There are 23 players in the squad and we play two games so hopefully I can make my debut there. There is a clean slate for everyone to impress the new manager. We have started really well in Under-21 qualifying so that gave me a lot of confidence coming back here to play at Brentford.”

Daniel was speaking after Brentford’s Development Squad exited the U21 Premier League Cup following a 2-1 defeat at The Valley against Charlton Athletic. The Bees took a deserved lead on the hour thanks to Jan Holldack’s penalty but the hosts netted twice late on to secure their path to the Quarter Final. The former Metz defender admitted it was disappointing not to have gone through, especially given the chances Flemming Pedersen’s side created in the first-half.

“We are disappointed that we didn’t get through to the next round,” said Daniel. “I thought we were the better team in the first-half and should have capitalised on a few chances. We played with a lot of intensity and passed the ball really well. We created a lot of chances and didn’t give them much. In the second-half we let Charlton run the game and they won it.”

Charlton’s starting XI included Igor Vetokele, their Sky Bet Championship top scorer last season, and another six players with first-team Football League experience. Daniel said it was a good test to take on a team with, comparatively, so much Football League experience and he was encouraged by how the two sets of players matched up.

“It was a good game for me as it is really nice to play against good opponents,” said Daniel. “Igor Vetokele has played in the Sky Bet Championship and he is very physical. He knows what it is like to play in the Championship and you can learn from him in the game. In the first-half I felt we were better than them and individually I didn’t see much difference between the two sides. We have a really good team here with the Under-21s we just need to show it more in the games to get the wins that we usually deserve.”
