Stuart Dallas said he felt the intense competition for places at Brentford was good for the Club.
Stuart started six of Brentford’s last seven games in 2013/14 and scored two goals as The Bees won promotion from Sky Bet League One.
He scored again in a pre-season friendly win over Barnet on Tuesday and spoke to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match.
The wide man said all the players were “chomping at the bit” to play and each of them had to be at their best when selected to secure a spot.
“It is going to be tough to get a place,” said Stuart.
“It is good competition.
“Everyone is chomping at the bit and you have to be on the ball when you are called upon.
“Everybody is raring to go.”
Brentford beat Barnet 5-1 on Tuesday.
They fell behind but Stuart headed in an Alan Judge cross for the equaliser.
Judge then scored two before half time and Andre Gray and Montell Moore added goals after the break.
“I thought it was good,” said Stuart.
“The first 15 minutes we were a bit shaky but once we got in to our normal rhythm, and routine, we looked very good at times.”
Stuart played on the right side of a front three and said his job was to create space for the midfield to play.
“We have got to make the pitch big,” he said.
“If I come inside it cramps the play.
“As wingers we need to hold a high line, which gives the midfield players a chance to move forward and get on the ball.
“We have to make the pitch big.”
Stuart said his goal came from gambling at the far post.
“As a wide player you have to take a chance,” he said.
“When Alan Judge has the ball his delivery is top class.
“Fortunately it came to me at the back post and I was able to get my head on it.”
Brentford spent the first half of July in Florida, training in warm weather.
Stuart said that had helped them.
“All the boys have come back in good shape,” he said.
“We finished off last season with tremendous fitness levels, we came back fit and going to America has benefitted us.
“You can see Barnet couldn't live with our pace, movement and fitness levels.”
Brentford kick off their Championship season on August 9 against Charlton Athletic.
Before that they have three home friendlies, against OGC Nice, CA Osasuna and Crystal Palace.
“We have to take each game as it comes,” said Stuart.
“Everyone is chomping at the bit to get going.
“We can’t look too far ahead, we have to take a game as it comes and see what happens.”
Stuart said he was looking forward to the two friendlies against foreign opposition.
“It will be a great standard of game and a great experience to play teams from different countries,” he said.
“Everyone is looking forward to it.”
