Development Squad Manager Lee Carsley feels things are starting to come together for his side after they recorded a third straight Under-21 Professional Development League Two South win on Tuesday.

The Bees made light work of a QPR side they beat 2-1 back in December, thanks to a brace from Jermaine Udumaga and strikes from Betinho and Bradley Clayton.

For Lee, who took over with Brentford bottom of the Under-21 PDL Two South, the confidence gained from the recent run of results is having a really beneficial effect on his players.

Speaking to Bees Player after the match Lee was in no doubt that his side deserved the win and praised the work rate of his players out of possession.

“I thought that we followed up last week’s good performance with another good performance today,” said Lee.

“It was good to see everything coming together.

“We started off really well and we had two or three good openings without creating any real clear cut chances.

“Even though we probably dominated play in the first-half from start to finish Richard Lee has pulled off two great saves.

“If we had gone in at half time three or four goals up it wouldn’t have been luck as we played really well in the first-half.

“We have been really working on our pressing in training.

“We are really good players on the ball but I felt we needed to be better off the ball as a team.

“They have really taken that on board; it is a mentality to press the ball and four or five of them were doing it every time.

“The boys are playing with a lot of confidence and they are enjoying their football.

“It really helps when you have got a bit of confidence in the team after they have won three games on the bounce.

“We have conceded only one goal in three games where before we were conceding for fun.

“From a defensive point of view it was a poor goal to concede.

“Daniel O’Shaughnessy switched off and the cross came in too easily.

“They are all things that we can work on.

“That was only the second away win in something like 18 months.

“They are really enjoying their football and it is good to see.”

Jermaine Udumaga grabbed another two goals in Tuesday’s win to take his total to seven in 12 starts and six in his last seven matches.

Lee was understandably pleased with the contribution of his midfielder but wants him to keep working hard as he feels there is more to come.

“Jermaine scored two good goals today but he could have got more,” said Lee.

“His all-round performances are getting better.

“I am still on about his work rate as I feel with the ability that he has got he should be taking this league by storm.”

The first of Jermaine’s two goals was scored from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by last man Coll Donaldson.

While in a first-team match the defender would more than likely have seen red for his challenge Lee agreed with the referee’s decision not to send the defender off, even if they differed on the reasoning.

“I definitely don’t want a player sent off in the Under-21s league,” said Lee.

“It was funny because at half-time I asked the referee why he didn’t book him and he said he didn’t know which player it was.

“I thought that was quite funny because you don’t get that in the first team.

“The fact that he was honest was good but I definitely don’t want to see players sent off.”

Lee’s men are next in action tomorrow under the lights at Griffin Park on Friday evening when they host Swansea City.

The Swans proved too strong in the first meeting as they ran out 4-1 winners down in South Wales with a team that included Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Barrow.

Lee said Friday night’s game will be a good test for his players both in terms of the opposition and in terms of preparing for a match just 72 hours after their last one.

“The boys won’t do much on Wednesday and then they will do a light session on Thursday,” said Lee.

“We will go through the game and the de-brief ahead of the analysis for the Swansea City game on Friday.

“At various parts of the season we have put them under a bit of pressure and played two games quickly so this is something they are used to and they will be fine.

“When we played Swansea first time Jonjo Shelvey was coming back and the two wide players played in the first team that weekend.

“I hope they play a strong team again because we are in a stronger position than we were in then.

“It is important that they go into the game full of confidence and keep this run going.

“In any walk of life if you have got confidence it makes your job easier.

“They are enjoying working hard at the moment and they are doing double sessions and triple sessions.

“Last Saturday I had them in at 7 30am just to put them under a bit of pressure and I think that I am more tired than the players now to be honest.”
