Brentford have reached an undisclosed compensation agreement with Barnsley after central defender Alfie Mawson joined the Sky Bet League One side in the summer. The 22-year-old turned down the offer of a new two-year contract at Brentford to sign for Barnsley in the close season. Brentford were entitled to compensation due to Alfie’s age and a deal has now been agreed without the need for a tribunal.

Alfie spent five years at Brentford, joining in the summer of 2010 on a two-year scholarship. He had previously been in Reading’s Academy. Alfie turned professional in 2012, signing a two-year Development Squad contract, and extended that stay for a further year in 2014. He made his Brentford debut in the Capital One Cup against Derby County in August 2014 and had loan spells at Maidenhead United, Luton Town and Welling.

Alfie spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. He helped them to the League Two Play-Off Final and won a host of ‘Player of the Year’ awards at the Buckinghamshire club. He finished third in the League Two Player of the Year poll of the division’s managers at the 2015 Football League Awards and ended the season with 50 games and seven goals under his belt. In his first season at Barnsley Alfie has played 39 games in all competitions and scored six goals.
