Brentford and Sustaina-Bees, a group of the club’s fans interested in the environmental crisis, have won this year’s Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) Climate Action Award.
The FSA Awards took place in central London earlier this week and is the biggest supporter-led awards show in the country.
The club’s head of sustainability and community James Beale, Sustaina-Bees co-founder Oli Chaplin, Dave Minckley of Brentford Independent Association of Supporters (BIAS) and Sharon Wright from fan group Bees United all attended the event to accept the award.
The award recognises the efforts of the club, who have been working with Brentford fans including the Sustaina-Bees, Bees United and BIAS, to make a positive impact on the environment and create a more sustainable future for all.
Brentford's work in this space focuses on five pillars: management and reporting, climate, circularity, nature and engagement.
Last season, we launched the Bike to Brentford scheme, which encourages more supporters to cycle to games by providing secure parking. We also worked with Trainline’s 'I came by train' campaign to help fans access discounted train travel to away matches outside of London.
Brentford has also looked to enhance green space in the community as part of our work in nature. In March this year, we opened the Robin Grove Orchard with Hounslow Council. 14 apple and pear trees were planted in Robin Grove Park by players, local councillors and children from Brentford School for Girls.
The club works closely on all sustainability initiatives with the fan groups, who provide their feedback on Brentford’s work in this space.
James Beale, Brentford’s head of sustainability and community, said: "We’re very proud to receive this award. Progress in sustainability cannot be achieved alone. Working with our fans is imperative, and we really value our relationship with the Sustaina-Bees, Bees United and BIAS.
"Their support, and that of our sustainability advisory board and wider community, have helped us introduce new initiatives that are considered, well-thought out and make it easier for us all to be sustainable."
Oli Chaplin, Sustaina-Bees co-founder, added: "It’s fantastic that the collaboration and impact of BU, BIAS, the club and Sustaina-Bees on the fan sustainability working group has been recognised.
"We are proud to represent the Brentford FC community. Anyone who wants to get involved and help us retain the award next year can get in touch on Facebook, X, Instagram or via the club!"
