Brentford is proud to be the first Premier League club to introduce a new staff policy based on the principles of Hugh’s Law.
Hugh’s Law is a campaign founded in memory of six-year-old Hugh Menai-Davis, who sadly died in 2021 after a 10-month fight with cancer.
Since Hugh’s death, his parents Ceri and Frances Menai-Davis have led calls for improved statutory support for parents forced to leave work when their child becomes critically ill. Hugh’s Law advocates for providing families with job protection, financial stability and emotional understanding so that they can focus fully on their child’s health.
Brentford’s adoption of this policy comes at a significant moment for Ceri and Frances, as their campaign reaches a major milestone in its third year. The UK government has formally named Hugh’s Law in the terms of reference of its Carer’s Leave Review, confirming that the couple’s campaign and charity - 'It’s Never You' - will have its own dedicated chapter within the review.
Brentford general counsel Nity Raj said: "There was no question that this was a policy we wanted to develop and implement for our staff immediately. Anyone who faces the tragic situation of a critically ill child is undoubtedly experiencing an extremely challenging and distressing time; work should not be an added pressure or worry.
"Our people are important to us, and staff wellbeing is a priority for the club. By adopting this policy, which provides paid leave and employment protection, we hope we can provide a source of support and reassurance at a time when it is needed most so families can focus on caregiving responsibilities."
Brentford’s new staff policy means enhanced support for all parents who are forced to step away from work to be with their critically ill child. It seeks to ensure they do not face unnecessary hardship, confusion or worry about their job or income during their child’s medical crisis.
Ceri Menai-Davis said: "Having Hugh’s Law explicitly named in the Government’s review and confirmed from the Despatch Box is a huge moment for this campaign. It recognises that parents facing the worst moment of their lives need more than sympathy; they need proper support.
"Brentford FC stepping forward as the first Premier League club to adopt Hugh’s Law shows what leadership looks like. We hope this will encourage other clubs and businesses to act now, rather than wait for legislation."
