Clayton Donaldson said Brentford deserved to win their Sky Bet League One match against Milton Keynes Dons.

The Bees were held to a 2-2 draw in Buckinghamshire yesterday, after letting a 2-0 lead slip.

James Tarkowski scored in the first half when MK goalkeeper David Martin let an Alan Judge corner slip through his grasp.

Clayton made it two when Adam Forshaw put him away and he finished well.

MK were awarded a penalty late on and then equalised in stoppage time.

Clayton, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford controlled the game and even though they were sloppy at times, their performance merited a victory.

He said even though they have already clinched promotion, the squad were disappointed to have let slip a lead, which showed the standards they set.

“I think we should have won it,” said the striker.

“We controlled the game throughout and were more like the home team.

“We were sloppy at times but we deserved to win.

“We are disappointed and that shows the standards we have set ourselves.

“The dressing room is down even though we are promoted; we have high standards to keep and are disappointed to give away a two-goal lead.

“We got a goal just before half time, always a good time.

“The keeper fumbled one and we capitalised.

“We deserved the half time lead and had control of the game.

“MK like to play their football and to dominate here shows how far we have come.”

Clayton got his 18th goal of the season in the win and said he was happy to see it hit the net.

It was his first since mid-March but the striker said he was not worried about the run without a goal.

He added he would like to get two more in Brentford’s two remaining games to reach 20 for the season.

“I saw Adam get on the ball and my first thought was to get in behind,” said Clayton, describing his goal.

“He picked out a great pass and I just had to control it and hit the target.

“It wasn’t the cleanest of strikes but I was happy it hit the net.

“My main objective was promotion and to contribute.

“I feel I have contributed and goals weren’t a problem.

“You want to get as many as possible but promotion was the main aim, and we have done that.

“I have set 20 as a decent target.

“With two games to go, that is my aim.”

Clayton scored directly in front of the travelling Brentford fans, numbering more than 3,300.

“It was a good half to score in,” he said.

“It was great support today.

“It was a good feeling and I could see the celebrations.

“It was a nice feeling.”

Brentford have two games remaining, away to Colchester United and at home to Stevenage.

They have 91 points from 44 games, breaking the previous Club Record of 85 points in a season, and Clayton said the squad was targeting 87.

“Everyone is focussed and want to get the maximum number of points,” said the striker.

“Brentford has never got this many points and we want to get the maximum.

“We have been involved in a great season and want to finish the job off.

“These two games are very important.

“We don’t want to relax; we want to finish on a high.

“You are as good as your last game and we want to win our last two.”
