Christian Norgaard believes that the atmosphere at the Gtech Community Stadium has played a key role in the team’s success on home soil.
The 4-0 victory over Manchester United last Saturday was our largest win in the top flight since 1938.
When discussing the game on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, the Denmark international highlighted the role played by Brentford’s supporters.
“The fans give us so much energy,” said Christian. “They’re responsible for a lot of points we’ve got at home because they create a really good atmosphere.
“We missed that history at the beginning, because our first season at the new stadium was without fans.
“Griffin Park was a special place. The away players hated being there; they couldn’t even close the door when they went to the toilet! It wasn’t the best stadium in the world, but there was a magical atmosphere.
“It was something I was a little bit worried about, whether we could get the same intensity and sound as we had at Griffin Park, but the fans have taken that atmosphere into the new stadium.
“We’re creating new memories and new history and hopefully that will continue.”
Brentford scored four goals in the opening 35 minutes against the 13-time Premier League champions, and Christian admitted that heading in for the break with such a commanding lead was a ‘strange feeling’.
“It was crazy,” he said. “We all felt that. We went into the game believing that we could win, we always do, but when I looked at the scoreboard I was like, ‘Wow, we’re up 2-0 after 20 minutes!’ Then it got even worse for them.
“We had a clear structure, especially for their goalkicks. It was important for us to set the tone. It was one of those days when everything clicked and that felt fantastic.
“The same cliches were flying around the changing room at half-time: ‘Be focused and play it as a 0-0 game in the second half.’”
The 28-year-old was also full of praise for Head Coach, Thomas Frank.
“Thomas is very personal with the players,” said Christian when asked about his fellow countryman.
“He cares a lot about how we are and how we feel. It’s a very important quality for a manager to have.
“Not every manager has it, and the ones that do seem to have more success. He’s definitely a leader and someone who guides us. He’s done a fantastic job in the years that I’ve worked with him at Brentford.”
