Chris Long said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton told him to go out and play with a smile on his face before he marked his first start for The Bees with two goals.

The teenage striker, on loan from Everton, notched a brace in a 4-1 win over Huddersfield Town last night.

His first came inside four minutes when he turned expertly and lashed home.

The second was just after half time, smashing in when a loose ball dropped in the box.

Chris, speaking to Bees Player after the game, said he had dreamt about scoring.

He said the words from Warburton helped him play his game.

“I had a dream last night that I would get a goal,” said Chris.

“My celebration was for my cousin, we were talking about it.

“I had no idea I would start the game today.

“When I found out I just knew I had to give 110 per cent.

“I did and we got the win.

“I was told to go out and enjoy it, play my own game and with a smile on my face.

“I was thankful he said that and I was able to do it.

“I didn’t feel any pressure.

“The manage put me at ease.”

Chris’ first goal came when he picked up a pass from Jonathan Douglas; he turned Murray Wallace and drilled the ball home from 20 yards.

He said he deliberately shot early in order to catch Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies out, a trick he learned from former England legend Michael Owen.

“I had a couple of bad touches in the first three minutes and I was worried it was not going to be my day,” said Chris.

“Once I got the ball for the first goal and got on the turn I knew I had the pace and the finish.

“Luckily it went in, I was very happy.

“I used to watch Michael Owen when I was younger, he hit the ball early.

“If it is early and low the keeper has no chance.”

Brentford dominated the first half but Huddersfield levelled against the run of play.

Chris admitted to feeling a little down at the break but was happy with Brentford’s second half response.

He scored soon after half time before Alex Pritchard and Jon Toral added late goals.

“I felt like we were losing at half time because they did not deserve their goal,” said Chris.

“We kept possession well and were doing well; we were a threat to the goal as well.

“We came out in the second half and got three goals.

“We’re very happy.”

The second goal was created by Jota.

The Spaniard set off on a mesmerising run down the right before the ball broke loose and Chris smashed it in.

“I thought someone was going to block my second goal,” said Chris.

“Luckily it went in.

“It was a poacher’s goal.”

The win came three days after Brentford had been beaten by Birmingham City and Chris said the squad had a point to prove after that loss.

The victory took The Bees in to the top six and they are only five points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

Their next game is away to Ipswich Town, another of the promotion challengers, but Chris said the squad were buzzing.

“We are very happy with the performance overall and a win is a win,” said the striker.

“We needed it after Saturday; we had a bit of a point to prove.

“Everyone is buzzing we are fighting for promotion and we want to keep winning.

“We have a team full of very good players and we can achieve a lot.

“Saturday is another big game, we will take them as they come and hopefully we’ll be OK.”
