Wolverhampton Wanderers 2015/16 season

League Position: 14th (2014/15: 7th)

Average league attendance: 20,157 (2014/15: 22,419)

Top league goalscorer: Benik Afobe (9)

Wolverhampton Wanderers, had a similar season to The Bees in terms of a varied set of results and mid-table league position. Finding themselves in and out of form for most of the year, they finished below Brentford in the Championship.

Adjustments were also made in January as Mike Williamson agreed to join on a permanent deal from Newcastle United and Joe Mason was brought in from Cardiff City. Benik Afobe went the other way, heading to AFC Bournemouth.

Further departures in the summer included Tomasz Kuszczak going to Birmingham and Sam Ricketts joining Coventry City. Kevin Doyle also swapped the midlands for Colorado, when he moved to The Rapids of Major League Soccer.

Their aim this season was to go one further than the last, when they finished just outside the play-offs after missing out on qualification via goal difference. In order to boost their chances, they added young prospects Conor Coady [Huddersfield Town] and Nathan Byrne [Swindon Town] to their defensive setup.

Wolves went out of both cup competitions relatively early, eliminated from the Third Round in both the FA Cup and Capital One Cup, losing to West Ham United and Middlesbrough respectively.

A big win against promotion contenders Brighton & Hove Albion on the first day of 2016 put them comforably 11th, and they rarely changed positions too much from there. By the end of March, 13th was theirs and the following month was spent hovering just above and below that mark. An unlikely 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on the final day, saw them secure 14th just a point behind Leeds United and two short of Queens Park Rangers.
