Burnley visit Griffin Park next season for the first time since 2003 having spent a season trying – unsuccessfully – to escape relegation from the Premier League after promotion the previous year. Their 2004 Championship promotion winning campaign was built on the foundations of a strong team ethic; with a squad small in numbers willing to go the extra mile for manager Sean Dyche.
They got their Premier League season underway at home to eventual champions Chelsea, losing 3-1. Defeats were the norm for The Clarets, who took until November to gain their first three points. They followed that up with an away win at Stoke City two weeks later but only two more victories (against Southampton and Queens Park Rangers) until the middle of March left Dyche’s men with a mountain to climb.
The home victory over Manchester City at Turf Moor on 14 March was perhaps the highlight, but remaining unbeaten in their last three games to climb off the bottom of the Premier League table meant Burnley could exit the top flight with their pride intact.
Danny Ings was Burnley’s stand out performer, scoring 11 goals in 35 league matches. After completing his four year contract, he is sure to leave The Clarets to continue his Premier League education.
Normally, teams battling relegation would utilise several players in an attempt to find a winning formula but Dyce kept faith with his squad, using just 24 players in the league, of which two of that number made a sole appearance as substitute.
In a league full of clubs with plentiful resource, Burnley will find it hard to replicate their success of 2013/14 in the Championship but Dyce is not a person many would bet against.
