Similar to our review of Birmingham City on Tuesday, Bolton Wanderers’ 2014/15 season was one to forget. Out of the summing signings, Liam Feeney, Liam Trotter both arrived from Millwall, plus Andrew Surman (Norwich City) were the pick, with striker Marvin Sordell leaving for Premier League Burnley.

Dougie Freedman began last season as boss but was sacked on 3 October after a dreadful start to the campaign that yielded just five points from ten games. Fulham romped home 4-0 at Craven Cottage with Freedman leaving two days later.

Andy Hughes and Lee Turner were appointed caretakers with ex-Celtic manager Neil Lennon appointed on 12 October. Lennon had been out of the game since leaving Celtic Park that summer; in his first game as Bolton manager he was sent to the stands in the 81st minute.

Lennon’s arrival coincided with an upturn in form, The Trotters reaching 14th place in the middle of January. Eiður Guðjohnsen and Emile Heskey, both in their mid-30s, had joined Bolton as free agents outside of the transfer window to aid Bolton’s attack.

From mid-January to early April, Bolton had won only three league matches, and slipped down the table but a 3-0 win at Cardiff City, plus two draws – at home to Charlton Athletic and away to Brentford – were enough to secure their Championship status for the coming season.
