Canice Carrol and Carlisle United exited the Emirates FA Cup last night after a thrilling defeat to Cardiff City. Carlisle had taken a 2-0 lead in the first game in South Wales but were pegged back and the replay was held in Cumbria last night. Carlisle took an early lead but ended up losing out by the odd goal in seven and Cardiff went through.

After going a goal up inside seven minutes, Carlisle – who let a 2-0 half-time lead slip in the first game – conceded twice before the break and then went 3-1 down early in the second period. They got it back to 3-2 and then 4-3 but could not find a leveller and Cardiff will face Reading in the Fourth Round next week. Canice, on loan at Carlisle from Brentford B, was not involved in the game.

Canice was the only one of Brentford’s players out on loan in action this midweek. Carlisle now face Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Mads Bech Sørensen and AFC Wimbledon have a game against Peterborough United while Reece Cole and Partick Thistle have a televised Scottish Cup tie against Celtic. Justin Shaibu and Boreham Wood travel to Solihull Moors in the Vanarama National League. The other Brentford player currently out on loan is Ellery Balcombe but his Viborg Fodsports Forening, or Viborg F.F. for short, side are currently on a winter break.
