Two goals from Josh Stockwell helped Brentford to an FA Youth Cup First Round win over Barnet.

Brentford were by far the better team and relished the opportunity to play under the Griffin Park lights.

Barnet came to West London on the back of a 3-1 win over Brentford in an Under-18 Professional Development League match but were soundly beaten on the night.

Myles Hippolyte put Brentford ahead before Stockwell doubled the lead just before the break.

There was, however, still time for Barnet to pull one back before half time as George Sykes converted a penalty.

Brentford came back strong in the second 45 and Stockwell scored his second of the night 20 minutes after the re-start to give them breathing space.

Michael Onovwigun drilled home late on and Fabian Rowe scored from distance in stoppage time as Brentford romped to a 5-1 win.

There was little doubt they deserved it – Barnet were kept in the game for long periods by their goalkeeper Dillon Barnes and Brentford also missed some good chances.

Hippolyte missed a great opening before the first goal, when he was unable to turn in a Richard Bryan cross, but made no mistake soon after.

He received a Stockwell pass and turned away from the defence before firing unerringly home.

Brentford continued to hold the upper hand after the goal – Barnes saved from Hippolyte before Stockwell had a shot blocked and Montell Moore fired inches wide.

The home side were constantly opening Barnet up on the visitors’ left hand side in the first half and the second goal came from such a move.

George Pilbeam broke clear on the right flank and drilled the ball across for Stockwell to convert from close range.

Brentford should have gone in at half time two up but allowed Barnet back in to the game with a defensive error.

Audrius Laucys sliced a clearance and then bundled Barnet striker Shaq Hippolyte over as he went to deal with the high ball.

The referee pointed to the spot and Sykes drilled it home to give Barnet hope.

Brentford did not allow that set back to affect them and took control after the re-start.

Hippolyte had a shot saved for the hosts and Stockwell shot wide before Lionel Stone missed the target with a header from a corner.

Barnes denied Stockwell with a fine save and Richard Bryan shot wide before the Barnet goalkeeper went full length to deny Pilbeam.

From the resulting corner, Barnes punched the ball straight in to Stockwell and it bounced over the line.

Barnet tried to respond, and probably had more of the play in the second half than the first, but Brentford made it safe with five minutes left.

The visitors failed to clear a corner and when Moore got the ball on the right he tricked his way in to the box and cut it back for Onovwigun to lash home.

James Bransgrove denied Sykes late on and the Barnet striker had a header blocked while Moses Duckrell had a low shot saved.

Sykes fired in a shot that hit his strike partner Hippolyte and then a post but Brentford had the final say when Rowe picked up a short free kick and fired in from 30 yards.
