Myles Hippolyte scored a last gasp winner as Brentford’s Youth Team beat Brentwood Town and booked a place in the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup.
The Bees had taken a 2-0 lead at the break as captain Richard Bryan and Montell Moore scored and the non-league side looked spent.
But Brentwood came in to the game having won 14 out of 14 this term and refused to lie down.
They levelled it up in the second half and looked the stronger team at stages before Hippolyte’s late strike.
The Bees had the better of the chances in the first half and by the break appeared to have the game won.
Hippolyte had an effort cleared off the line and forced goalkeeper Will Russell to save at his feet while Moore shot over when well placed.
The Bees had strong claims for a penalty when George Pilbeam was bundled over by Sam Cross but, like most decisions on the evening, referee Forrester favoured the Brentwood player.
Audrius Laucys made a vital tackle to stop Nicky Roberts scoring and Brentford went ahead soon after.
Michael Onovwigun raced clear and rounded Russell but Charlie Rolls somehow cleared off the line, however, Moore picked the ball up and crossed for Bryan to head in.
The Bees doubled their lead when Moore lashed home from 20 yards and Russell denied Onovwigun late in the half.
But Brentwood showed they could hurt The Bees when Cross headed against the crossbar and they came at the hosts after the break.
James Bransgrove brilliantly tipped away a Cross free kick but when Rolls delivered the corner, Ryan Cosson headed in.
The game opened up as Brentwood chased it – Josh Stockwell had a shot blocked and Russell tipped a Moore shot round the post while Cross headed over at the other end.
Brentwood thought they had levelled when Cosson’s header beat Bransgrove and Alex Akrofi turned it in from close range but the offside flag was up.
It was not clear if Cosson or Akrofi was penalised but if it was the latter Brentford had a lucky escape as the ball was going in anyway.
Max Herbert shot just over and Hippolyte hit the crossbar before Brentwood levelled with 19 minutes remaining as Akrofi raced clear, rounded Bransgrove and made it 2-2.
Brentwood were starting to flag and Brentford looked the more likely winners in the last ten minutes.
Russell saved from Herbert and Laucys’ follow-up was blocked, Rolls blocked a Hippolyte shot and the Brentford striker was denied twice more by the Brentwood stopper.
Brentford grabbed the winner with virtually the last kick – Onovwigun picked out a pass and Hippolyte toe-poked the ball past Russell and in to send The Bees through to face Reading in the Third Round.
