Brentford Women B's JGMT Cup campaign was ended on Sunday in the third round as they fell to Camden Town 4-1 at Wingate & Finchley Football Club.

A first-half goal from Abigail Claringbold gave Tommy Ryan-Maynard’s side a 1-0 lead heading into half-time. However, four second-half goals from the home side secured their win.

Following a postponed match last weekend, the Bees were refreshed and ready to go on Sunday. Ryan-Maynard made five changes to his starting line-up, with keeper Freya Walker, Samantha Jones, Lillie Elsbury, Kasey Clifford and Shania Foley each brought into the starting XI.

The game started as an even contest across the opening 30 minutes, with neither side able to put pressure on their opposing backline as the game turned into a midfield battle.

That changed on 34 minutes as Brentford opened the scoring through Claringbold. Running onto a long ball, the forward then lobbed it over the Camden keeper, into the left post and into the goal to make it 1-0.

Despite being 1-0 down, it was Camden who carried the momentum into the final stages of the first half - the Bees were forced to defend strongly to prevent an equaliser. Walker led the way in goal, making multiple impressive saves to keep Brentford’s lead at 1-0 going into the break.

New arrival Sakinah Awan was subbed on to start the second half as she made her Brentford debut.

Despite denying Camden an equaliser late in the first half, the home side equalised quickly as the second half got underway, as their forward tapped the ball in from close range off a rebound from Awan’s save.

They made it 2-1 on 53 minutes when a long-range strike from outside the box hit the top corner to give Camden the lead.

The Bees continued to look for an equaliser as the second half progressed but, despite some quality movement down the right side, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Despite some promising play from Brentford it was Camden who found their third goal on 70 minutes. Their counter attack forced Awan to be one-on-one and unable to stop the goal.

The home side secured their win on 82 minutes, scoring their fourth goal to ensure they went through to the next round of the JGMT Cup.

Ryan-Maynard praised his side’s first half, but added that Camden were the better team in the second 45 minutes.

“I thought first half we did really well to play the football that we wanted to play in stages - Abi’s finish was brilliant,” said Ryan-Maynard.

“It was just a slow second half to get going. We got caught twice on the counter attack and injuries didn’t help, but Camden played very, very well; all credit to them.”
