Brentford Women B have added a sixth victory to their growing win streak in the Greater London Division One North league, beating Hackney Women’s Reserves 2-0 on Sunday.
Goals to Abigail Claringbold and Kasey Clifford secured the win for the Bees at Bedfont Sports Club, extending their time at the top of the table.
In what would prove to be the case for much of the game, the opening 10 minutes was a stalemate between the two sides, Brentford dominating majority of possession but unable to penetrate Hackney’s defence.
The Bees’ first chance came through Cheyenne Faulkner on 12 minutes, who found the ball at her feet in the box following a corner but couldn’t convert.
Nia Bowman was superb down the right side throughout the first half, her speed proving a lot to deal with for Hackney. She had a shot on goal moments after Faulkner’s miss, however it faded across the face of goal.
The Bees wasted little time earning another shot on target, Shania Foley striking a powerful shot from just inside the box that hit the bar, rebounded to Faulkner, whose ensuing shot went wide left.
Brentford continued to dominate possession across the opening 45 minutes, their defensive group of Emily Boycott, Orla McComb, Alicia Henry and Lillie Elsbury able to quell any attacking moves by Hackney and get the ball moving in transition.
Bowman found herself on the attack again as the break approached, but her shot went across the face of goal.
Claringbold broke the stranglehold on 44 minutes, finding the back of the net following a pass from Faulkner which left the striker one-on-one with the Hackney keeper.
Coming out of the break with a 1-0 lead, the Bees had the game in control but sought a second goal to give themselves some breathing room.
The visitors nearly equalised on 52 minutes, Boycott forced to come to the egde of the box to make a tackle, saving a near certain goal.
Coming into the game in great goal scoring form, Claringbold nearly found the back of the net by accident, a clearing kick from the Hackney keeper hitting her in the face before rolling into the post, inches away from the goal line.
As had been the case in the first half, the game continued to be a stalemate across the second 45 minutes, Brentford unable to add a second goal to their lead.
Hackney continued to search for an equaliser, their attacking moves putting them in decent positions but ultimately were stopped by the Bees strong defence.
A second goal came on 87 minutes for Brentford, Foley finding Clifford with a nice pass, the latter firing the ball into the back of the net to secure the three points for the Bees.
