Brentford Women B’s Capital Cup campaign ended on Sunday following a 7-2 loss to Fulham Under-18s at Wheatsheaf Park.
The Bees found themselves down 3-0 just after the half-time break, but managed to pull a goal back through Leah Robertson soon after. Four consecutive Fulham goals put the game to bed, before Georgia Wood added a second Brentford goal in added time.
In sunny conditions in west London, the Bees started promisingly. Robertson pounced on a loose Fulham pass in their own half and fired at goal from outside the box, but her effort was kept out by Fulham’s goalkeeper.
The visitors responded with a chance of their own a minute later as they broke free down the right side of the box, however, Brentford goalkeeper Sophie Boycott came out of her goal and made a timely save.
A deflected ball inside the Bees’ box fell to Fulham in a central area soon after, as the effort from near the penalty spot went left of the goal.
Down the other end, Kirsty Matthews sized up a long-range free-kick, with her left-footed effort sailing inches over the bar and denying her the opener.
In a fast start to the game, Robertson again looked dangerous as she cut across the top of the box and whipped a shot across her body with her right foot, but she was denied by Fulham’s goalkeeper diving to her right.
The deadlock was broken on 16 minutes, as a dangerous Fulham corner bounced off the pack and into the back of the net for an own goal.
On the half-hour mark, Fulham doubled their advantage from another well-worked corner. After the initial set-piece was dealt with by Matthews, the ball was headed back towards goal and headed in to make it 2-0.
The west Londoners’ best chance of the first half came through Marta Boabonay as she broke down the right side and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper; her shot towards the near post was kept out. Boycott followed suit as half-time approached, again leaving her goal as Fulham broke down the right side of the box to make another timely save.
The deficit was almost halved by the Bees twice in the final moments of the first half. Esme Alaneme received a superb pass from Robertson on the right side and found herself one-on-one with the keeper, as she put her effort across the goal front.
Matthews pounced on a loose Fulham pass moments later and pushed deep into their box, but her effort at the near post was kept out.
Brentford started the second 45 minutes as they had ended the first half and were close to scoring immediately after the restart. Boabonay broke down the right side before crossing to Alaneme, the winger unable to control the ball.
Despite a strong start, it was Fulham who scored first, as a superb cross from the right side was tapped home from close range.
Brentford responded well through Robertson. The forward made a superb individual run against three defenders before being taken down in the box, the referee pointing to the spot. Robertson calmly slotted home the spot kick to make it 3-1.
Boabonay kept the momentum going as she turned her defender inside out and pushed into the box, but her attempt to put the ball across the keeper and into the goal was kept out.
The west Londoners’ momentum was squashed with 10 minutes to play, as a chaotic ball in the box fell to Fulham to tap home from close range. It was 5-1 soon after, as a well-placed cross from the right side was tapped home.
Back-to-back goals in the 90th and 91st minutes put the game to bed for the visitors, booking their place in the final.
Brentford’s reward for effort came in the fifth minute of added time as Boabonay’s superb cross from the right side found Wood, who finished strongly with her left foot into the bottom left corner.
The Bees turn their attention back to the league this Sunday as they travel to face Actonians Thirds.
