Brentford Women B’s unbeaten start to the Greater London Division One South season continued on Sunday with a 2-1 win against Civil Service at Bedfont Sports Club.
Following a scoreless opening half, a brace from league-leading goalscorer Marta Boabonay was enough for a three points which sees the side sit top of the table after two games.
The Bees came into the clash full of confidence following their 4-0 win over Hounslow CB Abbots, while Civil Service began their season with a 4-3 defeat to Actonians Thirds.
Despite these results, the game started evenly, neither side able to trouble the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes as they went into the break goalless.
The stranglehold was broken 15 minutes into the second half as Boabonay netted her first goal of the afternoon.
Emmi Tong took possession at centre-back and drove forward into midfield before playing through to Boabonay, who took a touch inside the box and finished well.
It didn’t take long for a second goal to come, with Boabonay doubling the lead a minute later. Makeba Black won the ball back and played a long pass to Boabonay, whose initial shot was saved, however she recovered quickly to fire home the rebound.
Just after the hour mark, the visitors pulled one back from the penalty spot, with the shot from 12 yards just beating the outstretched hand of Christie Tucker.
Despite conceding that goal and only having 12 players available on the day, the Bees held on for a hard-fought victory.
Head coach Tommy Ryan-Maynard was full of praise for his side post-match.
“We were really pleased with the performance considering we only had 12 players available,” he said.
“The team showed great character and togetherness and thoroughly deserve the three points. It's definitely a performance to be proud of.”
Brentford Women B now turn their attention to an away clash against South London Laces-Spartans at Dulwich Sports Ground on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).
