In a hugely entertaining game of futsal the points were shared between Brentford ‘A’ and Peterborough United ‘A’. Brentford, despite not having their full squad available, took the game to Peterborough and dominated the opening moments. However, in the second minute, The Bees Azhan Iqbal sustained an injury in a Brentford attack but their opponents played on and took advantage of the situation and scored the opener.
This was the catalyst for a Brentford fight back, which caused Peterborough’s defence problems. United’s goalkeeper stopped efforts from Iqbal, captain Louis Dailey and Alfie Hipwell. Despite this, Peterborough went into the interval leading by a solitary goal.
Brentford started brightly in the second half and a nine pass move resulted in Hipwell being fouled in the area. Hipwell got up to take the penalty, which was well struck but smacked into the right hand post. A minute later Hipwell got his redemption when more Bees pressure forced a mistake from their opponents. Iqbal intercepted the ball ten metres out and found Hipwell with a pass just outside the area and The Posh keeper was beaten.
Peterborough finally cracked when Bees keeper Saki Shire spotted Azhan Iqbal unmarked ten metres from the opponents goal and found him with a superb throw, which Iqbal flicked on and the goalkeeper failed to clear. That appeared to seal the game for Brentford when a rash challenge on the edge of the penalty area gave the Peterborough one final chance. The resulting free kick took an unfortunate deflection and beat Shire in goal for The Bees, the game ending 2-2.
The Bees ‘B’ team faced a daunting task as they had only five players available for the game. Ilyass Maalin was suspended for his dismissal against Norwich City while goalkeeper and captain Charlie Rose was injured.
Brentford were facing a team that had four players on the bench to call on while having to play without a recognised goalkeeper. Abas Ali scored in the third minute to give The Bees the lead. This was shortly doubled by Kyle O’Neill with a shot from seven metres. Later in the game, a poor clearance from The Bees goalkeeper was punished as The Posh pulled one back and that’s how it stayed until half-time.
After the break, Brentford scored a further times in the space of seven minutes - all from Frankie Finn - to put them into a 6-1 lead. Peterborough then conceded three more, two from Humzah Karim and another from Frankie Finn, giving him five goals in total. Unsurprisingly, he was voted Man of The Match. Peterborough pulled one back but then Karim completed his own hat-trick, taking the Bees goal tally to 36 goals in five games.
An audacious goal from the opponents keeper made the final score 10-3 to Brentford. Brentford’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams play Southend United in their final futsal league fixture of 2015 at The Copper Box in Stratford on 16th December. The programme restarts in January 2016.
