Brentford have signed goalkeeper Luke Daniels from Scunthorpe United on a free transfer. The 29-year-old former England youth international completed a medical over the weekend and signed a three-year contract, with an option of a further year, today, Monday 22 May. Luke’s contract at Scunthorpe was due to expire at the end of June and he would have been able to leave on July 1 but the clubs have agreed a transfer so that he can link up with The Bees at the start of pre-season next month.Luke was on the books of Manchester United as a youngster but turned professional at West Bromwich Albion in 2006. He had a series of loan spells during his time with The Baggies including a season with Shrewsbury Town, helping them to the League Two Play-Off Final, and one with Tranmere Rovers. Luke played for Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership and was with Southend United at the same time as his new colleague Daniel Bentley.Luke played one Premier League game for West Brom before leaving for Scunthorpe in January 2015. He spent two-and-a-half years with the Lincolnshire side and played a key role in helping them reach the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs this season. Luke earned international honours earlier in his career and played for England at Under-18 and Under-19 level, winning three caps in total.Dean Smith, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: "We have been looking to provide competition in all areas of the pitch and the signing of Luke will certainly give us this in the goalkeeper department. I have followed his career since his early days at West Brom and his signing – with having Dan Bentley and Jack Bonham on the books – will give us one of the strongest goalkeeper departments in the league. Along with the up and coming Ellery Balcombe, the Club should be very strong in this area for years to come.Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, added: "From a Club perspective, having three quality goalkeepers in the squad, as well as young players like Ellery Balcombe developing in the B Team, means we are well covered in this area and have great competition to play. Giving each of them appropriate game time is something we will address over the course of pre-season. I'd like to welcome Luke to Brentford and look forward to him making a big contribution over the coming seasons."
